After watching a Kirk Fletcher Master Class video I decided to change things up. I have always set my amp volume 1st and then adjusted my OD and effects pedals to match it - maybe a bit hotter re OD pedals. But in his video he demonstrates how he turns up the volume on a few of his pedals 1st then adjusts the amp volume to fit. So I decided to try it with my Cure, turning up the volume on my last pedal in the pedal board chain (Dr Scientist Reverberator) and then adjust the Cures 2 volumes and Line level accordingly. What a difference! With my ASAT I was getting fantastic tones not produced by my OD pedals (which are not bad at all). Then I decided to hit the EQ bypass switch - DANG! Killer tone! Now I need to try playing this at gig volume! Old dog learned a new trick!

That method could work well if you are playing out with a soundguy that actually runs sound. If you are soundguyless, or the dude isn't paying attention and doing his job, there will be too much volume difference going from pedals to amp-only clean. I do agree though, running the pedal hotter into the amp almost always sounds better.

Running the rig like Steve suggests, I wouldn't think I would be trying to get clean from the amp, I'd be turning my guitar volume down and cleaning up as best I could that way. I've got to try it out...makes sense that hitting the amp's first stage hard would sound great.
