So I got this amp about two weeks ago and have only had the opportunity to play it at home at relatively low volume since then. I was a former Z-28 1x10 alnico gold player for the better part of 8 years and in the past 1-2 years have been playing a z-lux 1x12 combo with a z12 exclusively. I had to let the z28 go in a trade for a guitar and was in need of a second amp. One trade led to another and another and I eventually acquired this M12, and let me tell you, I’m so happy I did! It reminds me a lot of my z28, and the ef86 just absolutely inhales my pedalboard. My Browne Amplification Protein and RYRA Klone sounds amazing through it. Haven’t had a chance to let my fuzzes loose on it at volume yet but I already know it’s gonna rip. I watched the champions of chime video on premier guitar a few times and honest to God the m12 sounded better than any of the other amps they played by a long shot. I read a few reviews on TGP that claimed that the m12 was “anemic” and lacked character, but that is the opposite of what my experience has been so far. Eq is powerful and theres a ton of bottom end and chime available depending on how things are set. The amp came with a 12 inch Chinese green back which I thought sounded nice clean, good edge of break up, but I wasn’t crazy about it cranked. I put a WGS et65 12 inch speaker in there and I’m extremely happy with it. The et65 sounds great with my z lux too. Just a great all around speaker. As far as speakers go, the only other ones I’m gonna wanna try are gonna be a Celestion alnico gold/cream/blue or a scumback of some sorts.

Running a gold in my M-12 and really like it. YMMV. but the gold is one of my favorite speakers.

"Anemic and lacking character" is the mark of someone who hasn't actually had one, or heard one in person. At low volumes, mine is sweet and rich. The more you turn it up, the happier it gets. Yeesh.

That’s exactly what I noticed too. People say all sorts of bogus things on TGP. Sometimes I feel like laptops need to come standard with a breathalyzer

Nice choice of speaker, trojan. The standard Greenback is good in that amp--but I feel the ET65 is even better.

Sometimes I feel like laptops need to come standard with a breathalyzer To be fair, sometimes people give up on a piece of gear before they figure out what makes it special. The M12 looks simple - 3 knobs, right? But the way the bass and treble works is deceptive (like a lot of the Doc's amps). Past noon and you start to get a near-boost experience. That's what unlocks the richness at lower volumes (IMO, anyway). The volume knob only makes things louder up till about noon (maybe 2). After that, it just gets more saturated. I can see someone trying to get a sound with the knobs turned low and wondering what the excitement's all about. My Maz Jr was like that, too. At first, I was puzzled about why these amps were so hyped. But after a while, and adjusting the knobs based on what I was hearing, rather than "typical" settings, I figured it out!

Congrats on the new amp!
I dig the M12. I have the head version. It took me a little while to find my sweet spot with it. But I got it dialed in nicely now.
I use a Z 1x12 open back cabinet with a Celestion Alnico Cream with mine. That speaker and cabinet sound great with the M12.

The alnico cream/gold is kinda what I’m looking at now as something I can use in either the m12 or my Lux

Not yet, but I'm supposed to be doing some recording in the next couple of weeks. I'll see if I can snag a clip of the M12 and Cream together.

Gonna be recording a few sets for my church with the M12 tomorrow at a good friends studio. Love having a low wattage amp to take to things like this! Will post videos.

Gonna be recording a few sets for my church with the M12 tomorrow at a good friends studio. Love having a low wattage amp to take to things like this! Will post videos. Just an update. Recorded 4 sets yesterday for our church. Bass and keys were recorded direct through a universal audio set up through protools, acoustic drums mic’d with my loud playing lil bro, and me with my pedal board, m12 mic’d with a sm57, and my k line truxton special dual P90. The m12 sounded amazing and kept up with the drums and other instruments well! I even had it on a brake lite on two clicks! My settings were as follows: volume at 11, bass at 1, treble at 11. It sounded amazing, and felt great playing. The playback of the guitar after recording was just amazing. The M12 is such a useful amp in a studio setting. The headroom this amp has for a 12 watt amp is impressive. With the settings I had the amp in, I felt like it was compressing ever so slightly. Responded well with all my effects and recorded extremely well. I was using P90s so there was some noticeable hum when I was on bridge and neck settings but nothing that would be recorded while playing. We had a lot of lighting and things plugged in so I feel like my power source wasn’t the greatest either. Pickups and power outlet were the likely culprit of the hum. This is my first time running the amp at gig levels and I am very very pleased!
