Uncrated my Z Wreck Jr today. I mostly play vintage style teles. I wound up setting the volume about halfway up, master about 1, treble at 1-2, bass at 10-11, and the cut wide open (!) I was impressed with how muscular the amp sounded. With the guitar volume down about 1/3, amp had definition and toneful clarity. Bought the volume up and the tone took on a more overdriven sound but still with good definition. More guitar volume yielded a bit more singing sustain. It reminded me a little of the sound of my Nova. Very responsive and dynamic. I can't wait until we can play out again. The Doc was right. This amp is its own thing. (And I also own a Z-Lux, Z-Plus, Nova, Jetta, and a Maz8.)

Nice review #ajteleman! Couldn't agree more! I too play mostly vintage style Teles and it truly sounds muscular, as you said. Out of curiosity: how does your Wreck Jr. compare to Z-Plus and your Maz8?
Also, I primarily get my drive from boosting a slithly cleanish signal with a transparent overdrive pedal. This amp works beautifully with all my overdrives. Just one thing, I can't get my Tubescreamer-type pedal (EQD Plumes) to cooperate with the amp. Any tips or tricks?

Hey, turberino: I installed a 75 watt creamback in the Z-Plus to better tame the top end. It smoothed out the tonal spectrum, imo over the original Z-12 speaker. The result is a very muscular blackface sound. My Maz8 was purchased (barely) used. I retubed it and it performs very well. I have previously owned a Maz38 and a Maz18, both of which worked well in 600 seat venue, but which are too robust for the rooms I work these days. I love the Maz sound and the Maz8 is plenty for most situations. I read a lot about players buying big amps, then choking them down with bake kites, etc. And while I understand the need for controlling volume, there is something wonderful about an amp running at its optimal output. Now the Z Wreck Jr is so dynamic and responsive it is a sheer joy to play, controlling the sound with guitar volume and tone changes. I use effects very sparingly. I have an older Carl Martin Quattro. I use the analog tap delay (always on) and tremolo on occasion. The unit has two overdrive settings but don't use them much. Same with compressor. Now with the Z-Plus and Z-Lux the effects fit the amp's tonal palette. I hope this feedback is helpful.
