Friends, i have been having a little fun lately just playing over backing tracks and recording it on my iphone. I am actually learning quite a bit about me and my strengths/weaknesses by doing this. The iphone does ok, but there is a fair amount of breakup by doing it this way.
Any recommendations about how to best record a room or what devices you would use?
Thx!

if you are getting breakup (digital distortion) on a phone video recording, try putting a piece of blue painters tape over each microphone on the phone (shouldn't leave marks or glue residue). i find that offers enough sound attenuation to avoid getting digital distortion. That is the next to simplest solution... the easier way is to turn everything down but i can understand why that would make the whole experience less satisfying.

Thanks! And could you please change your handle again? I've been perpetually craving desserts since you went with Half Strudel!

Well if you are missing out on spending money during the quarantine you can do what I did and buy the Shure MV88 video kit. Comes with a really fantastic stereo microphone and it's own audio and video software. The audio software controls the microphone gain, stereo field and can even do compression/limiting and EQ Pretty amazing gadget. The Video Kit version comes with a small tripod and a phone mount & microphone mount. The mount(s) can be used on a bigger tripod if you already have one. B&H Photo has 'em in stock. I got mine the next day.

I'm still kind of ole school. I record the the audio separately either through my PC setup (since we're talking about home recording with the quarantine) or I could use my Zoom H1. I then load the video and audio into my PC video software, align the separate audio track to match up with the iPhone audio track, mute the iPhone track, and then it's good.
Of course this assumes that you have some video software to work with and a separate way to record audio. Also, it takes more time. Not sure if it's helpful, but i figured i'd throw it out.
