Could someone confirm whether the Maz Jr is class A or A/B? Many refer to this as a class A amp but it seems to me it's A/B. Which would explain why it sounds to good with Strats.

Its a push pull class A similar to an AC 15.

There's interesting information on the definition of class A, "real class A" vs. cathode bias, and the AC-30 not being really class A on the London Power FAQ page, www.londonpower.com/faq.htm (scroll down to question #3, "How can I tell if an amp is really class-A?"). More of this here www.sheldonamps.com/classD.htm Sascha

No Dr. Z amps are true Class A. Not even the Stingray. This comes from Dr. Z himself. Class A is a misused term with amps. Vox AC30 isn't, either.

The only true class "A" is a single power tubed amp.

I think with multiple tubes in a pushpull cathode bias format its called class A1.

I'm with guys like Randall Aiken on this one. As a guy with an EE degree the use of "Class A" as a way to sell amps drives me nuts. My "favorite" is Mesa's term "simulclass". Two classes gotta be better than one, right?

This is considered a class A amp. More accurately ... it is a cathode biased push-pull amp. On my GAB website in the primers area ( www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/Primers.html ) download the 200+ page version and this will explain a lot.

I think I understand what Myles is saying... As in, by today's description of Class A amps, the Z's are probably no different than a Matchless or Bad Cat in terms of their description. I don't Dr. Z believes they are Class A in terms of fundamental definition. I have heard Z tell me "biased close to class A" in his descriptions of my MAZ 38 and 18. Push-pull cathode biased, for sure... JC
