Can I use a 5Y3 in the Jetta? Perhaps soften it up a little with a little less headroom?

Can you characterize the change it made in the amp?

I have never tried a 5Y3 in a Jetta, but I'm sure it will work. I would suggest an EH 5U4 GB , softer and smoother with less sag and heat.

Can you characterize the change it made in the amp? The 5Y3 made the amp a little too spongy. I have a 5R4 in it now, and am waiting on Doc's suggested 5U4. This is really fine tuning a great amp. I was thinking of the comfort/speed switch on the Z-Wreck and trying to emulate that by changing rectifiers. When all is said and done, I'll most likely go back to the original rectifier. I just like to tinker.

The rectifier isn’t going to impact your headroom or gain.
