First, I'm very new to this forum, so if my question is answered elsewhere just point me in that direction. Funny thing happened at the studio today. I went in to demo some 15-22 watt combos. Matchless, Bruno, Mojave, Victoria, Dr Z. I went in just knowing that I would pick the Victoria Deluxe. I just love that tweed overdrive sound. But then I played the Maz 18 Jr. OH MY GOD! Sorry to yell, but it's the only way that I can describe this amp. So articulate, wonderful distortion, a great in your face sound. And so much fun to play. I'm still grinning 6 hours later. Don't get me wrong, the other amps were great. But the Maz 18 Jr. was in a class by itself. I am absolutely blown away. So before I place my order tomorrow I need to figure out which combo to get; the 1-12 which I tried or a 2-10? The 1-12 had an amazing presence and fantastic bass. When playing single note bass runs it was shaking the chair I was sitting on. But I'm also a big fan of 10" speakers. Have a Super Reverb that was my main amp for almost 20 years. So any ideas, suggestions, would be a great help. Oh and I play mostly blues, rock and roll, some country. Thanks to everyone in advance!

2x10 vs. 1x12 is the great debate of the century. I'm a big 10's fan too. I too have a Super Reverb. For years I was looking for something that would be kinda like 1/2 a Super but take pedals better, like distortion...the Maz Jr is it. If you like the bass of the 1x12, you'll love it from the 2x10. I've never been a fan of single speaker amps. I like to have more push and multiple surface areas to disperse the sound. Having 2x10's is like doubling your options, and having 20" of surface cone to push the sound.
And with two speakers you can always mix/match, but with the Dr.'s 10's...no need.

Two speakers move the air in a different way than a single point source. Two tens always sound good. I've got a couple of tweed Supers, a brown Super and a Vibroluxe Reverb. They all sound great to me. They've got enough bottom and they can be just a bit more snappy on the top end. One 10" amps never sound very good to me but two 10s are more than twice as good. The Z 10s are great sounding. You won't need to change them out either, unless you want the coloration of a certain brand.

I used to be a die hard 1x12 fan but I was converted to 10's after owning one of Z's 2x10 cabs.

Guess I am the odd man out here. I tried the 2x10 and 1x12. I like the 1x12 better.

Another vote for 1x12. That's why I bought the head version so I can change as I want. To me the 2x10's didn't sound as good as I expected but I got the sound I was looking for out of the 1x12. To each his own but for me the 1x12 is tops.

Thanks everyone for your input. As much as I love the idea of a "half" Super Reverb, (and this was a hard decision to make) I went ahead and bought the setup that I flipped out over and got a new Maz 18 Jr. Combo w/ Reverb and 1-12" speaker, Red Tolex. Without hearing the 2-10 I really couldn't bring myself to order it. But, there could be an extension cab in my future.
But with the new amp I'm having a problem with cut control. With my Les Paul with Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups, the same guitar that I used to test out a Maz Jr. in the studio yesterday, I can't go above 8-9 O’clock without getting tons of hum. Below that and it's a dream. Guess we bring this one back and I'll try to talk them into letting me take the one they use in their studio that I fell in love with. Or order a new one from the Dr.
Again, thanks to everyone!

I bet it's a bad tube. I just had a new 12AX7 do that.

I'm glad it has the red tolex. I think they sound better.

I like the 12" myself. Another thing to consider is there is no shortage of 12" speakers to try to fine tune to your taste. (This can also be a bad thing furthering GAS).

For me, it depends on the amp. In my opinion an amp like the Maz Jr or the Ghia would sound better through 2-10's. I have a Maz Jr. 1x12 combo, I wasn't happy with how "boxy" and isolated the single speaker sounded, so I added a 1x12 extension cab and it really opened up the amp. I'm sure the 2x10 combo would have a similar effect.
I agree with Lefty, just not a fan of single speaker amps, sound is just better dispersed with 2 or more speakers. I would only go with a 1x12 if I knew I could add an extension cab.

Yes, two tubes. A bad Phase inverter tube and the wrong tube in V3. Took it back to my dealer, (Ultrasound Rehearsal Studios here in New York) they replaced the tubes and more. So keeping this one. It's true, Dr. Z has the best dealers for his amps. I don't want to go off topic here so I'll post more about this in the General, New Member. I wanted to introduce myself to everyone anyway and gush about my new Maz Jr!
But in speaking with dealer about the 12" combo, they also had rick's view that there are so many more options for 12" speakers. So if I need to swap or change, it will be easier. And now, with the amp fixed, I'm so happy with it's sound. And being new it's just going to get better and better as everything burns and breaks in.
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions.

Go for the head - then you can easily swap speaker cabs at any time. I have both the 1x12 and 2x10 cabs. Although I tend to go for the 1x12 more often, I am very fond of the 2x10. Also, don't overlook the benefits of a closed back, such as the Z-best or Bogner Cube.

i'm with tonezeolot and lefty on the 2x12 or 2x10 over a single. I tried to go with only one 12 of my 2x12 rx combo firing for a smaller gig and the tone just lost all it's life. the other 12 was reattached in short order. I bet the 2x10 woulda been cool but a 1x12 with a 2x10 extension might be too cool.
