The Maz 18 has been on my bucketlist forever and one finally followed me home today. It's a 2005 with reverb in red tolex. I got it for a good price and it's very clean for its age. The only problem with it was a microphonic reverb tube (Sovtek 12AT7EH), but that's easy to fix.
The previous owner installed all JJ's and used EL84's instead of the recommended 6N14N's. I'm going to start with a fresh set of tubes and wondered what y'all recommend. Feel free to just point me to existing threads since I'm sure one exists.

Welcome to the Forum. A lot of great people and information here! I'd suggest that you contact PerryR here for the 6N14Ns and his recommendations for tubes. A great guy!

If you want to 'hear' your new tubes change them one at a time.

Congrats on a great amp choice...phrase that's used here "everybody should have one" I think the quote is "everyone should have at least one!" Or was it the Ghia they were referring to?? Either way, I got it covered.

My amp has a microphonic reverb tube (12AT7) in socket 3. Will it harm my amp to play without it until I can replace it?

The sound GREAT, plus they will likely last many times over (maybe even the lifetime of the amp) what a standard EL84 tube set will.

Congrats on your new to you Maz!! It's a great amp!! I have had mine for over 10 years...it's a 2007 I believe. ZERO issues other than replacing tubes from time to time. Welcome to the forum!

Congrats as Mark N! I've had my Maz 38 for around 10 years, and my 18 for probably 3 years. Again no issues, just tube replacement, and the 18 has been fitted with 6N14N's for a year or so now, sounds great!

My amp has a microphonic reverb tube (12AT7) in socket 3. Will it harm my amp to play without it until I can replace it? No, it won't hurt a thing. Both halves of the reverb driver are used in parallel to drive the reverb transformer. I use JAN Philips 12AT7's in all my amps with reverb. Prices are not much more than new production and the JANs are tough.

A friend gave me a Groove Tubes 12AT7 tonight. I plugged it in and the rattling is gone. Yay!
The reverb is pretty out there when it gets past 3:00 but I go light on reverb anyway.

for Tubes Perrybis a great guy for sure. I would recomend starting out with Dr Zs recomended tubes from the website. Most of the time you will find that Dr Z has pretty darn good ears for picking current production tubes that sound great with his amps that wont cost a fortune. Perry can hook you up those too or any NOS you may desire. welcome to the forum! God bless, Todd

I played the Maz at practice tonight. I'm extremely pleased. I accidentally grabbed the wrong guitar and opened the case to find my Carvin strat, which I've almost sold several times. It sounded great and I won't be selling it.
I got there early to twist some knobs and there is not a bad tone in the amp. There is only a preference as to which tone you choose. And there are many ways to set it up.
There are two things I noticed immediately about this amp. It sounds exactly like your guitar. I've owned many amps including a couple of boutiques. The last one that I recall allowing the guitar's character to come thru this well was the Hotrod Deluxe. The second thing I noticed is it sounds exactly like your playing. You get out of it precisely what you put into it, including mistakes. lol!
It also takes pedals extremely well. The cleans are musical and the gains are tight with OD pedals. The delays pedals sounded better, even through the amp's front end.
I'm happy!

I know lots of folks say go with Dr’s current recommendation and to get them from Perry. You won’t go wrong. I was thinking the other day that my Maz seemed to have a little something extra before when I had JJ EL-84’s. Going to do some swapping soon to see.
