I pulled the trigger today.
Fyi, for the first time ever Sweetwater charged sales tax. I believe this is due to a law that went into effect 10/1/19 that allows many states to force online retailers to collect sales tax even when the retailer does not have a physical presence in the state. (The old way was that we the buyers were supposed to pay sales tax to our state governments on such purchases. I "guess" that did not generate enough revenue to suit the politicians. I'll stop there before this breaches the "no politics" rule. )
Added: Obviously, this sales tax thing does not come into play for those of you who live in states with no sales tax.

Yes, I have noticed this lately too on things I have bought off ebay and Reverb. I'm just going to buy as littlle as possible anymore if this is going to be the case online.

When I had to make some large purchases for my sound company earlier this year, the tax part of the equation surprised me! I ended up finding smaller retailers on Reverb. They still don't charge the tax.

FYI, the sales tax issue is actually is little more complicated than that. Each state has it's own policy regarding sales tax, but essentially each state has a threshold that has to be met (in sales dollars) before a retailer has to charge sales tax for shipments going to that state. For example, for the state of Texas, a retailer has to hit $500,000 in a calendar year in sales to that state before they have to collect sales tax. Thus, some larger retailers (Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, Sweetwater, Sam Ash, etc) will have to collect tax since they hit those numbers each year easily, while smaller retailers will not have to collect sales tax because they won't. We've been watching all this very closely for several years because we knew it was coming, but so far we're beneath all the thresholds. We'll probably hit CA and NY thresholds by the end of the year, but it will be close.

They still don't charge the tax. And this is another part of the somewhat complicated tax rules... Reverb is what is known as a "marketplace facilitator", and the tax laws are a little different for them. For example, as of this moment we only charge sales tax to the state where we are located (GA) but if we sell something on Reverb, then THEY collect sales tax for about 20 or so states because Reverb, as an entity itself, does hit the aforementioned thresholds. Rockerfeller must be in s state where marketplace facilitators do not have to collect tax, but many states do, no matter how small the retailer is. By the way, Reverb works *exactly* like eBay in that resellers have to pay commission. If you want the best price, always contact them outside of Reverb from their own website. You should be able to save at least the commission rate that way.

I know that GC and Sweetwater have to charge it but if you don't, advantage Humbucker!

I know that GC and Sweetwater have to charge it but if you don't, advantage Humbucker! That's right. Only the larger retailers will have to collect sales tax for CO shipments. I just ran a quick report and our total sales to CO this year is a little over half the threshold, so we probably will not have to collect sales tax to CO for many years, or perhaps never. It's a good idea to check with any of your favorite Dr. Z dealers to make sure, but I'd think very few of us would be collecting sales tax for a vast majority of the states.
