Hi all,
I took the plunge a few weeks ago and ordered a Kemper Stage. I thought it was time to see what this was all about and if I could find a use for it. There has been talk at my church about moving amps off the stage again but that has since died down. I thought this unit may be a solution.
Out of the box I was able to go thru a bunch of the factory set ups and it honestly reminded me of the pod that I used to have. Lots of uber high gain sounds with tons of effects. They sounded cool but were nothing I would actually use.
My son and I spent an evening with him playing and me turning knobs. Same impression, there were some good tones but neither of is liked the way it felt. I guess I will have to get over the fact that this is NOT a live amp sitting in front of me and that it will feel different and probably always will. We'll see . . .
Non of the factory amps or rigs were very interesting to me either. A lot of the buzzed a lot or were simply uber high gain. I should probably go back thru them but there are over 250 so I get numb to these pretty quickly.
Just for fairness, I like simple. I want to turn a device on and turn a couple of knobs and have it make whatever it is sound awesome. With the Kemper I have had to spend a lot of time watching youtube videos. Not what I like to do.
Last night I took a different approach. I set up the Kemper, headphone, laptop and guitar at the kitchen table.
It was a lot easier having everything all together so I was able to do a bias upgrade and install the rig manager software in my laptop (I ended up not using yet). I feel like I made some progress with this situation.
I also decided that I need some amps that I am familular with to be able to tell if those actually sounds good or not.
I went to the Dr Z amps web site and purchased Kemper 1. Maz 18, EMS, DB4, Carmin Ghia EZG are all in this package.
I had to watch another couple of YouTube videos and then I was able to put those amps on the Stage unit.
WOW!!! I mean it! The Maz 18 patches are incredible. The EMS sounded awesome. I am so glad I bought those patches. They sound so good and restored my faith in this unit.
I think my plan is going to be to set up some rigs with a couple of these Z amps and the delays and reverbs I like and try it out at church. I am going to use the xlr outs to feed the FOH and then run a monitor from the Kemper to my Carmen Ghia.
Like I said, I am not a big fan of fiddling around, no offense to those who do, so I will keep you all posted on my progress and see how I settle in.
A HUGE thanks to Dr Z for having those profiles available. I will down load the other one shortly. Oh, ya and thanks for the GAS for MAZ 18!
my 3 cents,
God bless,
Todd
