Hey all...I just picked up a 2007 CG in Red...killer tone, great cleans...and LOUD...(Collection growing slowly...Z-28, KT-45, and the Ghia)...all thru a "Z-Best" 2 X 12...I had to perform minor surgery on the Ghia, as the previous owner messed around with the transformer, and it was almost dangling upon delivery (cool band name???). Had just 2 screws with quarter sized washers...Yuck. Reached out to the Dr Z site and got my answer for correct screw size/threads, etc.... All is well now...and did I mention LOUD!!! I'm a pedal guy, with a few ODs and distortions...and all 3 amps take pedals wonderfully... the Z-28 breaks up pretty well...but I really don't play too loud. Basement dweller.
So...not now, but at some point, I'm gonna need a Z that has serious crunch...but at lower volumes...I've looked into the Monza, which looks like it would do the trick. Any other suggestions for a good, crunchy low-volume Dr Z head??? Thanks all...
BTW, I've been setting up/repairing guitars for quite some time, and always talk about how easy the better stuff is to work on...and let me just say that dropping the CG chassis, removing/replacing tubes, etc...was as easy as I've ever seen. Great design, Doc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you.

"Almost Dangling"... yes, pretty cool band name! Congrats on the new Ghia--killer amps, they are indeed. For crunch at lower volume, I'd suggest maybe a few options, or any combination of them: - Add a Brake Lite SA to the mix (it'll work with any/all of your amp heads!).
- Get a 1x12 speaker cabinet with a Celestion "M" Creamback (65W handling but it's not a "loud" speaker like the ones in your Z-best) which will definitely knock some of that volume down.
- Monza is awesome; just make sure to get the 4-knob version with the excellent Master volume.
- Maybe even check out an M12 (discontinued, but they're out there); I personally think that it acts like a mini-KT45--clean & sparkly but crank it up (much lower decibels than a KT45, mind you) and it gets more rich and moderately crunchy.
Again, any one of the above would work--at least a little bit--to bring your volume down and/or get more crunch at lower volume. And if you're a sucker for gear like the rest of us... get all four!

Mark...Thanks very much for the info...yes, big gear head here...the 4 knob Monza appears to be the right animal. the short-lived DB4 looks killer, too. I have absolutely no problem buying second hand, especially with the Z stuff. My Z-28 had a small issue when first purchased and my amp guy showed me the way to do some of the repairs, and how easy they are to work on. Will keep an eye out for the Monza, DB4, and giving more thought to the brake lite... I previously thought about the M-12...but seems redundant with the KT-45. Will research all these things further. Thanks very much.

Don't overlook the Maz GT (have a MV put on it). A whole lot of fun!
If you are anywhere near S.E. Michigan you can test out almost all the Zs at the Mini-ZFest on Sept. 21st.

Congratulations on the Ghia head! Nice to see that you have several Z's to choose from. Welcome to the forum.

The Z-Best cab is loaded with two 100db speakers...the V30 and the G12H30. Those are pretty loud speakers. The first thing I would consider is a single speaker cabinet with a low db speaker. I gigged with a 1x10 Ghia combo and it was great. Don't fear the 1x10. Yes, if you A/B a 1x10 cabinet against your Z-best, it will have considerably less bass. But after 3 minutes of playing, you will forget about that. Celestion makes a 10" greenback at only 95 db. (a 5db drop is huge) This speaker is very quiet. Going from a Z-best cabinet to a 1x10 greenback....the volume drop will be significant...you may have no need for a brakelite. Another alternative as mentioned above by Mark is to get a Celestion creamback "M"....at 97db. Not as quiet as the greenback 10...but fuller sounding. Even a 12" openback speaker/cab will sound very different than the Z-best. If your ears are accustomed to the Z-best, the open backs will sound void of bass, more mids...and just overall different. You may initially not like it. (because it's NOT the Z-Best) But there is no right or wrong. And like I said before, playing through just about anything for a few minutes, and you're ears and perception will change/adjust. I would also get an open back cabinet...just because it will sound so different than the Z-Best. That way, you can switch back and forth, even with the other two amps...just to keep things interesting.

Awesome, and thanks for the replies, all... Will look into these options. Appreciate the ideas! Finding room for a second cabinet could be fun!!! (I currently have amps/cab organized on a shelf, for ease of access and switching to the 2 X 12).

Don't be fooled, Mike works for a company that makes steel shelves. So he needed something to put on the shelves to make it look cool.
