I'm curious how the new amp will be tweaked and when it might be re-born.
Does anybody know when the DB4 will be renamed and re-released?

Honestly it's not on the top of the list. As great as the DB 4 sounded , it never really made a mark in sales which is very puzzling to me. I believe Lark Music in Texas still has all three of their DB 4 's , Head, 1X12 combo, and a great 2X12 Bluesbreaker combo.

Gawd Amighty, I just got off this amp and for the life of me, I can’t understand it why it didn’t go crazy with sales! This thing is freaking AWESOME! I was going around comparing 5 amps with my old Tele, and the DB4 was comparable with the Wreck as the greatest sounding rock amp in my arsenal. Not just rock, any kinda tune! I am gonna gig and record the piss outta this amp! Killer tone. Tight low end. Smoothest distortion, fully controllable with guitar volume knob. No pedals needed. Great with a brake. Stellar amp! Tip o’ the hat to Doc Z - you have made one of the greatest amps of all time!
This DB4 and the Wreck are the most versatile, do-anything-you-need amps I own. Or ever owned. Or ever expect to own. I don’t know how anyone could make an amp better than these. Everybody should own a DB4.
Doc, you gotta get this amp out there again. It’s too good to become a Legacy model. I think you should call it the Hammerhead Lincoln amp. 🙂

could the problem be the 5879 tube? i might shy away from an amp if i don't see every tube shop carrying it. also, is that type of tube more fragile or noise prone? some people think they might be. and from the demos, it has an EF86 flavor to the sound, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. it sounds like that hard, stiff EF86 sound, which might work on certain songs, but not on every song. which reminds me of the tom scholz rockman sound. cool for boston songs, but you can't dial it out for other stuff, when you don't want the crispy, hard mid hump. and to be fair, when i played a z-28, i never noticed an EF86 type of sound.

I don't hear that sound from mine. No noise, not crispy but full - no problem here.

It's a great amp. It's a shame it didn't sell more.

No issues here with the 5879 tube. I bring the DB4 all around inside a Studio slips clamshell. Never an issue. I also have a Victoria Electro King which I also bring to gigs and practices. That amp has 2 5879’s and I have no issues to report. I do have a backup 5879 tube just sitting in my tube bin just in case but I never needed it. You can get pretty good 5879’s still as they aren’t very popular.

^^^They do last too, I have a late 50's GA40T and it probably has only seen 4 preamp tubes in its lifetime. I have not known them to be unusually microphonic or tempermental. I would just get a hand full of NOS from a good source and it will not be an issue. I can tell you I have done way more tube changing with 12ax7's than 5879's.

There is nothing hard and stiff about this amp. I’m gonna say it again: smooth sounding and tubey. I made that word up, but this amp is very tubey. And quiet. Not sure what made me doubt it a week ago, because I just spent an hour on it with bedroom level brake, and it was simply glorious and gorgeous. Can’t hardly wait for the next gig. This is a well rounded amp that can play anything from rock to country to blues to jazz. Maybe not metal, but ..... who cares? Get an EMS for that.
