Heard sm1 at wrk today talking about usuing used or aged preamp/phasesplitter tubes to add headroom to an amp - thoery was they have less gain ther4 less pwramp overdrive.
Any1 tried this in a maz jr? Does it actually work?

I just compared a Weber Blue Dog, Tonker & Swamp Thang using my Ghia, and the Emis increased the headroom dramatically. I really love that Tonker with the Ghia and my Maz Sr.

Bigger venues, crowded jams, outdoors= Tonker...smaller rooms= alnico Bluedog, greenback, anything less efficient.

This is not the best idea as even though you have low output from the used tubes so the output section is driven less the tube will crap out faster, sound flubby and lack articulation. Use a lower gain fresh tube.

A better way of doing this (without changing speakers) is to use a 12AT7 in the phase-splitter, lower gain 12AX7s upfront, like the Svetlana 12AX7 (which also happens to have a real sweet tone too) and a duet of GT-EL84-S #7-#10. Keep in mind though that this will make it harder to get a lot of compression and sustain with pedals unless the Master is pretty cranked up.
