This weekend I played at the same bar I played last weekend. It was with my 3-piece and was much quiter on stage. The weird thing was that it seemed like I had less clean headroom. The Maz seemed like it was breaking up a little sooner than normal. IT wasn't a problem. I just kept the volume low, and the soundman turned it up real loud in the monitors. Anyways, sometimes I wonder if it might be nice to have just a little more clean headroom, although I can definately get by without it since I always mic. the amp. Any body run in to this?

Maybe your output tubes or rectifier tube are getting old?

I just went home and cranked it up and it sounded awesome! I guess in a big open room it dirties up a little more. I am still thinking about trying out a Sr, but at lunch my Jr. sounded so good. It made me late getting back to work.

The nice thing about a Senior is how well the master volume works. It sounds good as quiet as you need it to be, and yet you've still got all the headroom you need. The bad part about a Senior is the weight (my 1-12 combo weighs 60 pounds) and the fact that you can hardly ever actually crank it all the way up. At least I never have been able to.

My Jr sounded great out of the box, but the tone degraded rather quickly....sounds like what you're describing...it sounded good at home, but I noticed it at gigs. I actually started putting out ads to sell it cuz I figured the honeymoon was over....then I blew the HT fuse and started checking tubes. It was the rectifier that had died...and after only a few months of moderate gigging.....so I retubed the amp completely with JJ's, (this way I now had spares), and I was blown away by the tone of the amp again. If you notice thtis, don't hesitate to retube that puppy. Not only will it sound better, but hopefully you won't lose it at a show like I did.....thankfully I always run a two amp rig!
