I've been using my MAZ 8 head with an Egnater cab loaded with a Celestion G12H30. It sounds nice but I'm going to order a Dr. Z 1x12 cab and I want to try something different and am looking for suggestions. I don't have a lot of experience trying different speakers. I mainly use the MAZ 8 set clean and drive it with pedals. I'm primarily playing blues, country, classic rock. What should I get?

I love swapping speakers around in my Z amps and I usually end up with what comes stock. But in the case of my Maz 8 ultralight combo I ended up with one of Doc's Z12 speakers. It sounds insanely good. FWIW, I've got a Gold in my Maz 18NR ultralight.

Order the Z cab with a Z-12. I think you will be surprised. I used a C-Gold in mine for a long time and loved it but that speaker is $200 more. Maybe you don't need that. I play with more break-up than I used to now and I use a Scumback M75. It works better if you play a lot through dirt pedals.

My canned response regarding the Maz series is try the Celestion Cream Alnico.

As I seem to recall - the Man 8 originally came stock with a blue in it.

I like the Blue best with the Maz series.

I ordered my Maz 8 with a regular G12-M65 Creamback. I currently have the amp set up for clean headroom, and get my OD from pedals. In the past, I had it set up with a lower Tc# 6n14n for amp based OD tone. The Creamback sounds great either way.

I’m curious about the Blue but it’s a pretty steep upcharge. Maybe down the road I’ll try one. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

My Maz 8 had the G12H30 and it sounded great, but I had a Z12 laying around from a previous amp so I tried it. I think it sounds amazing with the Z12, I’ve tried the Maz through my Z plus C.A.B. with cream back, and the Z12 with my tele or LP won out! So in short +1 for the Z12!

I’ve already ordered the cab with the Creamback. I can play with speaker options down the road. The cab should be here Monday. I love the cosmetics.

The cream back is a great speaker too, I love it in my Z -Plus! It’s gonna be a good looking rig!

Last night on my gig, I used my Maz 8 combo with Celestion Gold, plus a Dr. Z extension cabinet with a Gold! Glorious!

It looks cool, how's it sound? Are you running it open back of closed?

It looks cool, how's it sound? Are you running it open back of closed? Unfortunately I haven’t had a lot of time to play it yet but it sounds great. Bigger and fuller that the Egnater cab I had been using. I’m running it closed but plan on trying it open also. It’s a great cab. Very happy with it!

That is a similar setup to how I ran my Maz 8.
you can get good girth with The open back.

Regardless of the speaker I've put in it, I always end up with the center panel off the cab. It just sounds fuller, bigger. I love the way open backs spread out the sound.

When playing at our church or other churches I use a plexiglass shield in front of my Maz or Z-plus... it allows me to crank em up a bit more and pushes the sound up, and seems to fill the room really well!

Used to have a Maz 8(my first Z amp, and me second all time favorite, after the amazing Z-Lux). My Maz 8 came with a G12H, which sounded really good. Specially wonderful bottom end. I changed it for a Scumnico. Bottom end was not so clear and bloomy, but I liked very much the creamy flavor of this alnico speaker. I also tried it with the Z12 which came in my Z-Lux combo. It's a wonderfull speaker. May have been my favorite between the 3, but my comparaison was biased because of the bigger cabinet of the Z-Lux.
