Just played my first gig with my (1x12, Weber Silver Bell 30W) JR. Fabulous! If I want a little more head room, can I make a tube change? I don't want to change the speaker, as I love the Weber. If so, which tube(s) would I change, and what kind?

Try a 5751 or a 12at7 in V1 of your Maz Jr.

An extension cab would help.

Try a 12at7 in the phase inverter position.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I tried a 5751 in V1. That helped, but I was still looking for more. I wound up replacing the Weber with a Celestion Vintage 30. That gave me a lot more headroom.

If you want even more headroom, try an Emi Tonker. They sound big, clean & loud! I've just been through the following speakers and the Tonker is THE one for my Maz Sr. V30, G12H, Weber Blue Dog, Cannabis Rex, Swamp Thang.

I looked at the Tonker - is there a 10 inch version? (Looks like only a 12 on the Eminence website) I'm thinking for my Maz Jr R.

I'm using British-made G12H-30s in my 2x12 Jenkins cab now, but have been extremely impressed with the clips of the The Tonker I've heard and wonder if it would give better articulation and clarity with pedals than the G12H-30. What do you think? How do they work with Tubescreamer type pedals? Too much midrange?

Try a 5751 or a 12at7 in V1 of your Maz Jr. The AT7 is not a good tone generator ... it has about the same gain as a 5751 but the 5751 is a great tone generator and much smoother. A 12AY7 in the phase inverter spot will give lots of clean headroom as will a 5751 in the PI slot. Then you can keep your same front end tubes if you like the way the amp sounds and responds with any pedals as example now. More clean headroom with the 12AY7 than the 5751 but both give more clean headroom than the 12AX7. Also, make sure your output tubes are fresh. Use #6 or even #7 EL84S for nice headroom.

What do you think? How do they work with Tubescreamer type pedals? Too much midrange? I use a Burris Boostiest, Barber Silver LTD & Stampede SOV-1 for my pedals. One side of the Boostiest is an "improved" Tubescreamer. I especially love the Tonker with these pedals. With my PRS I can get some nice Robin Ford type tones. The midrange in the Tonker really helps with this. I think the Tonker sounds more open and articulate than the Chinese 16 ohm G12H that came stock with the Maz. Less compression also. The G12H sounded kind of nasal in comparison. Avatar speakers was selling the Tonkers for around $55.00 shipped. Although he had them listed under "scratch & dent" they are not flawed in any way. Call Dave at Avatar. I bought a Swamp Thang from him for that price also. I just sold that used on the gear page for $50.00. I also saw a Tonker sell for $50.00 on Ebay last week. Try one & dump it if you don't like it, but I bet you will.

Just got my special order Dr. Z 1x12 open back cab to go with my Maz Jr 1x12 combo, and MAN what a difference!! Really lets the amp breathe and I do notice a significant change in clean headroom. Now when I play the Jr. with only 1 speaker it just sounds "boxy" and confined compared to the 2x12 setup.
