Eye opening. I had no idea, and never thought about how it was made. I probably assumed synth or mellotron at the time. I have always loved that song, now even more. Thanks for posting this.

Godley and Creme were definitely innovators and inventors, in both music and video production.

The recording technique aside, this is a very good song. I think it could have been recorded using more conventional instrumentation and still been a hit. Interesting chord progression. Catchy melody. Soulful lyrics. I'm not a big fan of the band in general but this was special. Absolute genius.
