So.... I recently bought a Dr Z KT-45. In an effort to accentuate it's Hiwatt-ness, I took my old 4x12 Hi-Tone cabinet out of storage. It's loaded with 4 Hi-Tone DR-F's, which are receations of the the old purple back Fane speakers that were paired with Hiwatt heads. It saw a lot of hard use back in the day, and, when I brought it back to the studio, I heard some rattling. The bottom speakers had both become disconnected. I actually find 2 speakers more palatable for studio use than 4, but my question is, if the cabinet is rated 8 ohm, but two of the speakers are disconnected, does that change the load? Pardon my electronics ignorance, but it's never been my area of expertise. I'm just curious because I'd be just as happy using it with the two connected speakers but I don't want to hurt my beautiful new Z by hooking it up to an improper load. Thanks!

yes, it probably will. and it will matter how they were wired and which two became disconnected.
someone can correct me, if i'm wrong...
when the cab was stock, it sounds like you would have four 8-ohm speakers. 2 sets of two wired in series to get 16 ohms, then each set paralleled to the jack to get 8 ohms.
if that's the case, you might now have 16 ohms at the jack, or 4 ohms, depending on which speakers were disconnected.
someone should look inside the cab and confirm the wiring and speaker ohms ratings, or test the jack with a multi-meter to get the resistance.

We need a diagram or a picture showing all the wiring including the speaker terminals. We can tell you exactly what you have and how to get what you want....

It looks to me as if you have two sets of two speakers, each pair wired in series, then the two pairs are wired together in parallel.
So, if the speakers are 16 ohms each, the total cab yields 16 ohms.
If they're 8 ohms each, total impedance is 8 ohms...
Does that help? Wouldn't hurt to check it with a multimeter....

Also, if you choose to run just two of the four speakers it will likely change how it sounds as you would be essentially using 2x12s in a WAY oversized cabinet. The compliance on the two active drivers will be greatly increased in a closed back cabinet of that size. Might be really cool for low volumestuff though. Never tried that before.
