A TRUE Class A amp has no phase inverter, and the output tube(s) is in conduction mode at all times. It never turns off, and it amplifies both the positive and the negative swing of the signal wave. The tube never "shuts off", it's always working as long as signal is present. Doc explained this in detail yesterday at Z-Fest.

The whole "Class A" thing is probably the amp topic with the most hype and misinformation. As a electrical engineering geek with OCD I've always had a particular loathing for terms losing their meaning and being misused for marketing.
