I have a Carmen Ghia head with a custom 1x10 cab loaded with a celestion greenback 10. I love it dearly but, it doesnt quite have the clean headroom I need. Theres a remedy on local craigslist. Use considered offering my ghia in trade but, I'm not sure the remedy would have the clean room I'm looking for either.
Would the Remedy fit the bill for an amp that can do relatively clean (edge of breakup tones) but also give up the goods when I need to let the dog eat?

Some people are able to get Remedy cleans but it's clearly in the plexi arena. If you get a very efficient speaker and keep your guitar volume rolled down you can get a relatively clean sound from it. You might want to look into a Maz 38 which would have the clean you are looking for.

I used 5881's to get much more clean head room for my Remedy.

For several years I gigged with both a Remedy and a Ghia. For smaller gigs, the Ghia was used. (it was a 1x10 combo) For larger stages, I used the Remedy. This approach worked well for me. Even though the Ghia is a 2 X el84 amp...there's a lot of Marshall DNA in the tone and feel. (which for me is a good thing) If you feel the Ghia doesn't have quite enough headroom...the Remedy should fix that. The Remedy at full power is considerably louder than the Ghia. (It also has a bit more of a muscular punch to it...especially in the bass) The 'edge of breakup' volume difference between the two amps is very noticeable. But I will say: You're using a 10" greenback. That's a VERY inefficient speaker. Meaning..for the same amount of power coming from an amp, your speaker will be noticeably quieter compared to others. As said above..switching to a more efficient speaker will make the Ghia MUCH louder. If you move up to a 12" speaker, your options/choices for these loud/efficient speakers is greater than for 10" speakers. Of course, you'd have to get a new/different cabinet. If your Ghia is a head and your 1x10 is a separate cabinet, you could get an additional 1x12 cabinet with an efficient speaker. Then you'd have a choice: 1) quiet 10" speaker or 2) loud 12" speaker. (That 10" greenback could be great for home/recording use) If you clearly love the Ghia as you say...I'd pursue the 1x12 cabinet w/ efficient speaker before I'd trade for another amp. The new speaker WILL make a big difference.
Also, the 10" greenback is only a 30 watt speaker. If you use a full power Remedy (40 watts) with a 30 watt speaker, you'll be in danger of ruining the speaker. So if you DO go for the Remedy, you'll probably need a new speaker anyway.

^All truth.
I run a Ghia with the volume at 1100 and the Tone at 1 o'clock. When I dig in to a big chord, it breaks up, and that IME is irrelevant to the speaker. The amp may be louder with a speaker rated at 100spl as opposed to one rated at 96, but I find the breakup about the same.
Yup, been eyeing a Remedy...

The Remedy's cleans are glorious, no doubt about that, but depending on how "clean" you want your clean, it may not be what you want. It's really designed to give you a great sounding breakup, and that's what it wants to do. My personal experience was that messing around with the tubes, etc. did help, but changed the sound that I liked, so I eventually got rid of mine. YMMV, of course.
I think John's suggestion is excellent. If you already love your Ghia, try a more efficient speaker (or speakers! share the love!), and see if that gets you there. Cheaper than a Remedy and if you *do* end up buying a new amp, you've already got the speaker cabinet for it.

The WGS C/S10 is affordable and higher powered than the GB. It has a robust low end and smooth top end. In my experience it made the Ghia stay cleaner longer. I run the V at 11 o'clock and the tone between 10-2 clock face.

I've never tried the WGS C/S10, I know from their ET-65 that they make great speakers. But for a 10", the Celestion Gold is marvelous. It really sounds great with the Ghia, but it is $175...and in my very humble opinion worth every cent.

I should have mentioned also, I dont exclusively use that 1x10 cab. It's just my usual go to because I love the way the greenback sounds when I need light breakup ar reasonable volumes. I also have a 2x12 closed back cab that I run it through on occasion depending on the need and it just isnt there like I need it to be.
I also have a Maz 38 sr. I used to use it and the ghia kn stereo at a house gig I play 6 nights a week. It was just too loud for the room so, I took the ghia out. I prefer to leave the Maz set up at that gig all the time just to keep from having to tear down and set up so much.
I have considered offering the guy a trade for my amp and cab for his head. My head isnt in the greatest shape and his is the MV remedy in pristine shape.

Maybe the MAZ 38 with a Brake Lite or less efficient speaker is a better option than trading the Ghia. I’ve really missed my Ghia as it is so easy to set up and blend with a band/2nd amp. I always wanted to try a Remedy.....tough choices

The Dr himself has a solution for more headroom in a Ghia - NOS 5751 in V1, Nashville pickers trick acts like a low sense input. Tung-Sol or JJ 12AX7 in V2 JJ EL-84's in V3, V4 - bolder tone and response will add headroom. V5 - NOS 5V4 rectifier, will add more plate voltage to increase wattage, but will still feel right. DR.Z Read more: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/67304/looking-little-more-headroom#ixzz5GU18MnMGThe speaker advice above is spot on too. A Celestion 10" Gold would be a big step up for headroom but still have great breakup.

I went there the other day. (because of this thread) The 10" gold is 98db. The 10" greenback is 95db.
(and for some strange reason, I can't get to the website now)

How about start using the MAZ with a Brake Lite...dial it back for quieter gigs, etc. ?

I did the same thing for the same reason, John. Celestion's website is still down as of this morning.
I was pretty sure that the Gold was more efficient than the GB.

Speaking of efficiency the WGS C/S 10 is efficient and fat sounding. Seriously, there's ample headroom and girth to be had with the CG in the 1/10 combo. I'm hoping to have audible samples for you guys next week if my new mixer shows up in time for Friday's show. I will be using said amp/speaker combo and documenting the moment.

When I had both the Ghia and the Remedy at the same time, I was always a little surprised at how similar they could sound. I always kinda felt the Rem was like a bigger Ghia, if that makes sense. Certainly the Rem was a bit more Marshall, but the Ghia could get awfully close.

you could try a 12AT7 or 12AU7 tube in the Remedy if it's too gainy, maybe. (i haven't tried it).

I never use a 12AT7 for ANY amp's first stage (V1). They work fine for a phase inverter or a reverb driver but not in V1. Maybe a 12AY7 would be a better match. It cuts the gain considerably but won't kill your tone.

^ Dave's right, 12AT7's aren't recommended as the first gain stage in an amp. If a 12AX7 (gain factor of 1) is too much, start by going down to a 5751 (gain factor around 0.7) and from there, to the 12AY7 (gain factor 0.45).
