The time has come to upgrade my 10+ year old JBL's. Was wondering if anyone had solid recommendations for a studio monitor pair under a grand???

I can give you some recommendations. A few questions first.
1. What size drivers are your current speakers?
2. Are they active/powered?
3. Do you have a place where you might be able to listen to some of the new ones?

Passive currently. I have a separate Denon power amp and a receiver with pre outs, so I can go either way. 3. Yep, I'm trying to make a trip up to Pro Audio Land sometime soon. They carry most of the staples.

Got it. Now would be the time for you to move towards powered monitors. They really have a lot of advantages. Most of them are bi-amped and the amps are optimized for the drivers. They also have the ability to tune them for your placement with minimal adjustment in top and bottom end. I recently got new monitors for my home set up. Our main monitors at the studio are powered ADAM P33's with ribbon tweeters. I wanted to stay close to those at home if I could. I focused on ADAM, HEDD and EVE audio. HEDD and EVE were both founded by designers who left ADAM. I was replacing some powered Yamaha monitors. Here's what I would recommend. Some are a tad over your price range but not much. They are all powered so you are getting that too. Presonus. Has ribbon tweeter. Most affordable of the bunch vintageking.com/presonus-r65-studio-monitor-singleADAM Ax5. The one to beat when listening in this class vintageking.com/adam-a5x-singleHEDD Type 05 www.altomusic.com/hedd-type-05-studio-monitorEVE Audio SC205 www.altomusic.com/eve-audio-sc205-2-way-5-active-monitor-single-speakerFOCAL Alpha 80 Budget offering from a very respected brand vintageking.com/focal-alpha-80-singleI listened to all of these. Spent a good deal of time with the ADAM, HEDD and EVE speakers and ended up buying the EVE's based on the sound. Make sure to bring a couple pieces of music, on CD if you can, that you are really familiar with. Hopefully the place you go will have a good switching setup so you can get the volumes dialed in the same. All the powered monitors have volumes on them too. Make sure they are all set to "flat" with the EQ's on the back. Good luck!

I've had a chance to hear the Presonus R65 at a home studio. I was impressed. At least for a near field monitor. The guy was still using a powered sub with it.

Adams are sweet...Neumanns are interesting and never really looked into those...not cheap but you get what you pay for...ATC are way pricey as well...but once again you get some of the best drivers...imho.

I had a pair of JBL Centuries that were used and somewhat abused. When the cones died, I had several adventures.
The (Peavey) AMLs 3-ways were actually very good. Because it bothered me to mix an album on Peaveys, I “upgraded” to a pair of KRK V8s. Probably not a change for the better. I then used a pair of coaxial ones (from a company that used to be big, but I’m spacing on right now) that were decent, but fatiguing and had very little bass. I tried a few others before moving up to Dynaudios that were pretty good.
In retrospect, I think the JBLs, if I had had them reconed and new foam on the tweeters, would have served me better- even as monitors- than the under a grand bunch at the time. I have recently converted to a very nice set and am not looking back.
If I were looking today, I would seriously consider the prosonus anda few of the other coaxial tweeter models by APS, or even some of the better consumer Polks. I would also consider having a trusted source bring the JBLs up to spec- they might still be your best option.

I'm sure the T Series has some compromises vs the 1K pairs but I wanted to let you know about them

I pulled the trigger on the Adam T7V's.
So far, so good! Great value for these speakers. Part of me wonders how good the A7X's sound... :-)

I know when I got the big P33s at the studio it changed everything for us as far as delivering more detailed, finished mixes. I recently worked on a record that we recorded in St Louis. Studio had NS10's. They certainly do make you work hard. I was so happy to get the tracks back to Brooklyn to really hear them on the ADAMs.

Been cranking music through them all weekend to break them in. ADAM suggested 8 hours, which seems to be true. The highs are very crisp and clear without being fatiguing. I probably recorded and mixed for a good 5 hours last night and my ears felt great afterwards. The 7" woofer has enough bass and oomph to not make you long for a subwoofer, something I would contemplate with the old JBL's. The HP and LP filters on the speakers are an added bonus, however, I haven't felt the need to use them in my room. I went back and listened to some old mixes I did a few years back and they seem so very congested. Interested to see how this latest project turns out on these ADAMs. Hopefully my mixing skills have gotten better, too...

Rehashing this one a little bit but I’m in the middle of purchasing monitors and I’m looking at several of those mentioned above. Options are:
Adam A5X Eve SC205 Hedd Type 05
I was set on the Adams, but their availability date keeps getting pushed back l and I’m getting a bit anxious. The Eve and Hedd pairs are readily available and could pick up either one. The Hedd pair I could purchase for the price of the Adams, and the Eve pair would be slightly more.
When comparing the three in person, is there really that much difference between them? (unfortunately, I’m not able to do a comparison of the three together.).
Eric, what made you go with the Eve set over the other two?
I’ve probably been reading/thinking too much and I’m going to guess that any of the three will suit me just fine.

All 3 sounded great. I preferred the Eve’s. The HEDDs were slightly mid forward by comparison with the all trims in the flat position.
I really liked the Eve’s but all three were very close. I’d be happy to work on any of them.

I have a Kemper inbound. I was looking at getting a FRFR cab but I'm short on floor space in the Man Cave (same reason I can't squeeze a Jetta in😒).
So, I figured I'd upgrade my monitors and go that route. I dropped by the shop today to look at getting some big monitors that would sound good with the Kemper.
Man, I listened to a bunch and was blown away by the diminutive Neumann KH80s. What a fantastic little monitor. I thought they may be too small for what I wanted but they just sounded so good. I then thought about it and realized I have a high-end subwoofer in my room that belongs to my stereo. I can run mains out to the Neumanns and another one out to the sub. That should make for a great setup.
Needless to say, I put the Neumanns on layaway as I await my Kemper. Oh, and they were on sale as well 😎

Didn't stop me, Keith. I'll stack it on another combo or -- this is a good plan -- sneak it into the family room
