Thinking about the Clark Gainster. Any opinions? What are some other suspects that cover the same basic tonal and gain range?

Which one? The Clark or the Barber version?

I am open to either version. Kind of lean toward Clark but not gonna say it has to be the big box.

If I'm correct that Barber basically designed this pedal with Clark, then I'm sure it's perfectly fantastic.
I own/have owned a zillion Barber overdrives, but not the Gainster. Though, I'd venture an educated guess that the current Barber Half Gainer can probably most-accurately replicate the Gainster, or close if not identically.

I know they are expensive. I see a few on reverb ever once and a while. Heard they are really good too.

I've had the opportunity to compare two of the Barbers with a Clark Gainster, and they DO sound different. They may be the same circuit, but different components. I kept the Clark Gainster.

I've owned a couple of the Barber version. Loved it with a Strat and a Maz 18, less impressed with humbuckers and a Z-Lux. Sits very much in the TS camp--the low gain setting on the Barber Gain Changer is virtually identical. Funny thing--when I finally decided to sell the first one on eBay, there was some bidding and it ended up going for a pretty good price. Know who bought it? Mike Clark. My guess is that they're not just the same circuit, but that the components are the same (the Barber version was hand-wired), and Clark was repurposing the Barber circuits for the big-box version.

This doesn't make sense. Why would Clark be putting pre printed circuit boards in his big box pedals? And I've never seen a hand wired Barber pedal.

Well, maybe he just buys them to take them out of circulation? Beats me.

Thanks guys. Found a big box Clark version....almost mint. Got a great deal on it. Should have it here in a few days. Psyched up to give it a run.

Got the Gainster today. Loving it so far with my Les Paul. Have not had much time with it but so far I love what I am hearing.

That really is a pretty build. Another vote for plexi bottom. Beautiful attention to detail, I really like it.

Isn't it very close to a Red Snapper, from Menatone?

Isn't it very close to a Red Snapper, from Menatone? Yes, it's a TS/OD-1 circuit without an output buffer. They do sound different. The Snapper, at least the old 3 knob version had more clarity. I miss mine.

I miss mine. Ok thank you. The Red Snapper is a great pedal. I've had two and kept the 20th Anniversary, 4 knobs version. I guess the 3 knobs version would be too aggressive for my taste.
