last saturday evening had an early show at a local venue under new management. hours of practice, thousands of $$'s in gear, new investment in lighting and the bassist bought a new hat. i think there were 5 people in the venue when we finished at about 10pm. i'm the only one with a solid job in the band so, as the drummer struggled to divide the $130 three ways, i told him to give me $10 and he can split the remaining $120 with the bassist. if i have to pay to keep them around and interested, i will. if i had to play for free, i would... probably 7 nights a week. Is it a blessing or a curse or sometimes a bit of both?

damn, I'd pay to keep those guys around, too! Sounds great! I'm less than sold on the hat, though - maybe show the bassist this?

Not a fan of the hat either. I'm looking for an even taller one so he doesnt upstage me.

Is it a blessing or a curse or sometimes a bit of both? I've wondered this many times over the years. ....some of the stuff I've allowed myself to 1) do..2) get caught up or involved with...3) the abuse and hardship I'll put up with....etc. You put up with crap after crap after crap...then you have that ONE gig that is incredible, the tone, the songs, the feel, the audience...everything comes together. Then back to crap crap crap..... This topic could be a whole thread by itself...and it might not be pretty.

Dig the tune , really dig the playing! You're light years ahead of me Ian. I think the hat works for the bass player.

Sounds good Ian. I'd rather play for ten people that sounded in to it than 100 futzing w phones and chatting over the music. When I play music that doesn't typically make money (originals/jazz) I consider it a bonus to make anything besides happiness at playing those tunes.

Now, I realize he is just protecting liberal hippies LOL! yes. We thought Billy Jack was a bad arse, too... right after David Carradine's character Caine in "Kung Fu". and, again, it's "Liberal-assed hippies". i should know... i am one.

here's a good one... after this gig, we were offered any date in February to play. We chose Feb 10th, our bassist's birthday and promptly began planning out the night. The band would play one 1-1/2 hour set at 8pm follwed by a second set with a bunch of our favorite local musician friends sitting in with the band to finish out the night. In the mean time, we get asked if we can play on the 3rd with one other artist. It's a last minute booking but we think it would be a good way to promote our show on the 10th the following week. we take the gig opening for one act. a few days go by and we start getting messages from the club.. "ok, so it's going to be you and so and so and one other band. the opening act (solo) is from out of town so she get's 50%, the other two bands (total of 8 musicians) splits the other 50%. then "hey... so, here's the line up... you guys go FOURTH" we reply... "whoa... Fourth?? i thought you booked us to play with one other band and then it was 3 and now it's 4? ?" the club replies... "the fourth band is my band (the bookers), i was just using us as a place holder in case someone else can't make it." us... "ok, but this is not what we were booked for and we will respectfully be backing out on the 3rd. we'll stick with just the gig on the 10th." so, i call the bassist and i say... please confirm with the club that they know our plans for the 10th..(cause i'd seen this train go off these tracks too many times). The bassist assured me that everything was taken care of and he "could not have been more clear with the club about our intentions". that's about when we get a message from a local musician letting us know the club booked them to open for us from 7-9pm on the 10th. we call the club and ask WTF??? (turns out the club is owned by a husband and wife and each one keeps their own booking calendar and then they get their bartender involved to help them reconcile the calendars and he starts keeping a 3rd calendar.) the opening act drops out when we explain the situation to them (cause they're a friend and they understand...) but that pisses off the club who booked them to play from 7-9 so that when we go back to the club and say we will be starting at 8pm, they insist we start no sooner than 8:30 so as to not interfere with the dinner crowd!!!! Again, WTF??? you booked the opening act to start at 7pm!!! now we can't start until 8:30!! i bet we never play there again after the 10th.... lol

That club sounds like a $#1+$how. I'd play the last gig and roll on. No need to give them a chance to trash your band's rep bc they can't get their calendars in order and on the same page. That's some crazy I'd steer clear from.

Just about every shot on every round sucks, but then you hit that one good shot and everyone oohs and ahhs. Truth. Perfect analogy. Good one, Tee!
