So my Z journey began with a Maz 38 2x10 combo. It was just pure magic! I've since sold it, and tried several other Z models (Remedy, Z Lux, KT45, M12, Maz 38NR Head, and a Maz 8). I remember how easy it was for me to dial in that Maz.
I now have a Z Lux, which I absolutely love! I also have a Maz 8. While I really do like the Maz 8, I'm not sure that it quite does the Maz 38 thing. Not from a volume standpoint, but tonally. I bought the Maz 8 for use it a church setting - thinking it would be easy to dial in at lower volumes. It does that extremely well, but I also have no problem using the Z Lux in that setting (on half power).
I wish I had a Maz 38 NR to compare to the Maz 8 and especially to the Z Lux. The Lux isn't going anywhere! But I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe I might consider swapping the Maz 8 for a Maz 38.
So I come here for some input from the experts. Is the Maz 38 too close tonally to the Lux? Or is it different enough that I could get a different enough vibe from the 38?
Idk. I always have at least 2 Z's. The Lux isn't going anywhere. But what is the other amp to be? Hmmmm...

From what I have read....18 doesn't do what 38 does either...cant see riding the merry go round just to come back to 38...can always get rid of 38 if the magic aint there nomo.

Yeah, that's sort of what I'm thinking. From what I remember, the Maz 38 had a certain authority and chime that's different from the 8 or 18, or the Lux.

In your question about zlux and 38 differences... with my brief experience with zlux.... it was nothing like my 18's/maz...hence sticking with the maz's was my choice just for sheer familiarity/convience...two different animals imho.

Yeah. I wish I had a Maz 38 here to A/B with the Lux. Just going from my memory of the Maz 38, I think it had a bit more chime and maybe a certain authority that I liked. I'm thinking it might go well with the Lux. I just wanted my 2nd amp to be enough different from the Lux to do it's own thing. I hope that makes sense. I'm probably not explaining myself too well

Perfect sense...I think you intuitions are on...and from my experience its that much (my 18's were) different than zlux

I guess I miss the way a Maz 38 can "lean a bit" into Vox territory. That makes it different from the Lux imho.

That’s what I’m thinking too Jason. I’m gonna try to swap out my Maz 8 for a Maz 38 NR. Wish me luck!

Well, I sold my Maz 8, and sort of got "sidetracked" and grabbed a deal on a Therapy. Hahaha. While the Therapy is a really cool machine, I'm set on a Maz 38. I'll sell the Therapy to get a Maz 38. My biggest regret is letting my Maz 38 go. Take it from me fellas... hang on to your 38's. There's just nothing out there that can do what they do!

redzsrock, my 38 Sr NR is available if you’re looking to get another one. I haven’t got around to posting it on the FS page, but I mention it as you seem keen on getting one back into the collection!

Maz Sr and Z-28 were my first Z amps (of MANY) and still my favorites to this day.

Even though I use my Maz 18 more these days, my 38 definitely has that chime and authority described here. I've kept mine for that reason, I have always loved that amp, and although the 18 does some things better, the 38 is going nowhere.
