Hey All - I foolishly sold a CG head a few years ago and have been kicking myself ever since. I now have the chance to buy another one, and there are two contenders: a 25th Anniversary model which of course has a master volume, and a one that's about 4 years old. There's not much difference in the price, and I know that it's a "win-win" situation, since both are great amps.
I've read the threads here discussing the Anniversary model, and it seems pretty clear that the master volume is out of the circuit when turned all the way up, and that tonally, there's no real distinction between the Anniversary and the regular CG.
So my questions are (1) are there any disadvantages with the Anniversary model? And of course, (2) based on your CG experience, which would you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

We A/B'd the two one year at my place - with the MV out of the circuit we didn't notice a difference in tone. As I recall, there was a different taper on the volume between the two (I think the MV Annie got to full-volume faster) but they sound the same. The MV is always a nice feature to have if you can't always play loud.

And like you say, the MV could come in handy when I can't play loud, which will be most of the time. I'm definitely leaning toward the Anniversary model. But I'm still curious: If the Doctor believed that having the MV on the CG was a good thing, why has he made so few of them? Curiosity aside though, it will be great to have a CG, and maybe even a bit greater to have one of only 50!

A lot of Zs have MVs - they are quite effective. Not all Zs lend themselves to a MV which is why they all don't have it. As I recalled, some early CGs actually had MV so Doc thought it would be a good thing to include. Also, the cabinet was a small head like the Annie.

The only difference may be from the years made....earlier models were a little quicker to get dirty. The Anni Ghia will stay clean a bit longer up the volume dial.
I would get the Anni. Way more rare!

Thanks guys! I'll pull the trigger on the Anniversary CG later today. With the Anniversary and the regular CG being priced about the same, the MV and rarity of the Anniversary make it a better bang for the buck.
