HI, I normally don't post on threads but Love my Z amps and was curious about the possibilities of my Ghia. I have a 1x10 combo that I acquired and upgraded to a Red Fang Alnico from the Dr Z eminence. I gotta say I really want something a bit more "open" i guess. Honestly I have to say I've never played a 10 that sounded so good but i'm a 12 guy and think if I'm going to keep this I may need to adapt. Can anyone tell me if the head portion can work in a cab that's for a 12? I would happily buy a custom cab if anyone is aware of a builder, I have the brake-lite in it too so this could be a amp that would sit happily next to my beloved maz 18 NR. Please feel free to tell me any thoughts of what I should pursue. I'm also curious about doing a 2x10 cab that would possibly incorporate the Z speaker and the Alnico? Maybe cool? I don't know. Thank you everyone this is a great forum and it's so great to be around Z owners. I've bought all my Z's sight unseen and never been upset. The Dr has been great to all of us 'patients'. Cheers!

1x10 Gold seems very open sounding to me.

When I had my 1x10 Ghia combo, it came with a Red Fang. And I really didn't like it. I put a 10" gold in there and within 3 seconds...three seconds(!) I knew it was the right speaker. The fang was also too loud.

Another Gold fan here. Best $175 I've spent in a while. I've got a stable of 12s, plus I have tried the 10" Red Fang, Ramrod, and Doc's own 10s. They're all really great speakers when paired with the right amp. For the Ghia the Gold wins in my book.

1st choice would be a 10" gold, 2nd choice would be a 10" Greenback.

And yes, the Ghia chassis will swap into any of the small chassis head or combo cabs (Ghia, Mini, Monza, Z28...). Lots of people like the 110 - you could probably find someone willing to work a trade on a Z head cab, 112, 210, or even 212 combo cab. Or consider keeping it in the 110 as a grab and go combo and using an external cab for those occasions you want "more"

How cool would that look as a mini stack running a 110 combo on top of a matching 110 cab?!!

Thanks for so much feedback everyone! It's like Z owners are just nicer people, haha. I am curious if the Gold is a big difference over the Alnico Red Fang (not the ceramic) I have run it into my Maz cabinet with a Blue in it and obviously that sounds great. I just kinda assumed the Alnico Fang would be close to the Gold but maybe I'm totally wrong. Is there also any feedback on what power tubes are ideal? I have JJ's in it now and that seems to be what most amps from Doc I've owned or played have had. Thanks again for all the info!

When I said above that my Ghia came with a fang...it was the alnico magnet.
And yes, there was a big difference in tone. The fang has a lower midrange push/focus to it that I really didn't like. Of course, I was going for a specific tone. (Tele playing modern country) But there are many others that like the 10" gold. Celestion did a great job with it. The gold also seemed to have a better crispy top end.
The 10" gold will be a LOT closer in tone to the blue than the fang. So if you like the tone of the Ghia through the blue....that's pretty much what it's going to sound like.

Thanks John, I appreciated that. I guess I'll be seeking a gold out. I love my blue and i've seen a lot of people with the gold in their 1x10s and have been super happy! I wish I lived in a town where I had access to play boutique amps. I bought my maz sight unseen and it was the best decision I ever made! I also bought my /13 sight unseen/heard. I've been blessed i loved those both. The ghia- same story! I'll pursue a Gold since everybody is pretty much in agreement that's THE speaker!

If you really want to go with a 12", it can be squeezed into your 1X10 combo cab. You'd have to swap out the baffle for a 12" one. It's not too difficult. Here's a pic of mine with a ceramic speaker, but an alnico fits as well. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/73445/12-speaker-10-combo-cab
