My neighbor bought a Cure this week and was ready to ship it back to humbucker. I asked him why and to bring it over. Let me preface this with he has also owned a Maz 18 and didn't get the knob interaction on it until I went over and opened the amp up for him. He realized how great it sounded but didn't bond with it. So he asked what I thought was a versatile combo and I mentioned the Cure had gotten tons of great reviews and it was more affordable than a Z-28 or most of the other Z offerings. So he came over yesterday while the wife and kids were gone and we spent two hours playing and tweaking the amp's knobs. Honestly I wish this has been the first Z amp I ever played bc I would've gotten it. The '28 took that spot and isn't leaving anytime soon. Back to the Cure. I asked how he had it dialed in and he said he went to a band practice and had it low and wasn't keen on his sound. I put the Volume at noon the Master at noon and then Level to just below our speaking voices. His face lit up. He was wondering how it sounded so full. Stepping on the boost the added breakup made him giddy. We eventually ended up with me playing my 1/10 Z-28 & him his Cure and jamming without pedals and it was Z tone in spades. I asked him when he was leaving if he was still going to send it back and he said, "No, I realized when we were jamming how great it sounded and it reminded me of the first time I heard you play through your Z. The tone was so good." I think I've converted him to a Z player. If not I know someone who may be getting a Cure, soon... ibb.co/nicZOk

Unfortunately, we live in a world of instant gratification. We are used to something working right out of the box without reading the instructions or negotiating the learning curve. And we are all guilty of buying a guitar or amp because xyz player uses it and then being disappointed because we don't sound like them.
Great insight in this post. Thank you for sharing it.

Doc, Thank you for making such an array of versatile amps. This was my first experience with the new cab, too and it blew me away weight wise and tonally. The Cure is an exceptional value and there are so many good sounds inside. Glad to own my Z-28. Thank you, sir.

The Cure has so many great tones, but you do need to spend a little time with it. When you do, you'll be rewarded in spades. Glad your pal decided to hang on to it.

We do live in an age of instant gratification.... but, sometimes I've been plenty guilty of brain farts & read knobs wrong. Especially after coming from the bass rigs back to guitar rigs - I always wanna boost/cut frequencies instead of just altering tonal structures. On my last trip to a Z dealer, I was torn between the Cure and Maz 18 NR (thinking about replacing my Monza with one of these lower gain amps).

I see so many people complaining about the sound of an amp or pedal. But they never twist the knobs ! They leave everything at noon or some lucky number combination . But sometimes you have to twist to extremes to squeeze the juice out!!!

Yeah, I've found those knobs to yield breathtaking results but that's just me.

I think noon is strictly a starting place.
Sometimes you can get a good sound there, but usually the best sounds are a combination of somewhere else.

Yeah, I've found those knobs to yield breathtaking results but that's just me. I bought my Cure on Eric's recommendation and I was not disappointed!

Also, let the speaker break in before the final judgement on this amp.
