What's the problem with the cure being up against the wall? I'm in a small room myself and wouldn't have the space to move it out from the wall. It would allow the amp to "breathe" (metaphorically) a little bit better--the sound will bloom out and become more room-filling. If it's right up against the wall, practically touching, the amp might sound smaller/more narrow. I think Doc just simply wanted to ensure that Jon wasn't hampering the amp's full potential by choking it off, sound-wise. Could potentially lead to over-heating too, I suppose, if it's running for a long time without airflow. But Doc's amps are pretty robust and I've rarely (ever?) seen one overheat.
