Hello All!
Long time lurker here but this is my first post. I have a MAZ 18 Jr NR 1 x 12" combo with a G12H30 Anniversary speaker and just acquired a Ghia 1 x 12" combo with a Vintage 30. I like both speakers but I am thinking of trying out a Red Fang Alnico. I have a line on a used one at a good price. Can anyone describe the tonal differences I may expect in both amps compared to the original speakers?

Glad you finally decided to sign up for an account.
The V30 has a VERY dominate upper mid spike in tone. Some like it, others don't. Back when I had my ghia, I never used a V30, although there were several others that did. From what I hear, it seems to go well with the Ghia.
The Red Fang should have less of that upper mid 'honk' to it. And a bit more crisper higher end. Before you spend the money, I'd give that V30 a decent chance.
Also, I'd plug the speakers in your combos into the other's amp. (Maz into a V30, and G12H into the Ghia) ...just to get an idea what different speakers can do.
As for the maz: I personally think the Fang will sound MUCH better than the G12H. The fang will have more mids. ..and a bit less bass.

I did try each speaker with each amp and the difference was interesting, although I do like both the original speakers. A lot of people on this board like the Red Fang 10" Alnico so I thought I would pick up a 12" used one and see what it sounded like. I do agree that the Red Fang would probably sound better in the MAZ than the original G12H30.

In my opinion...
The G12H sounds great playing alone in the basement. But when it comes to a live band...it gets lost in the mix because it's got recessed mids. The guitar is a mid instrument, knocking out mids with the H doesn't go over well with me.

Before having a complete understanding of this my ear was trained to prefer scooped mids. I think the reason being is that the amps I was using never had mids that sounded clean. Maybe this is the magic of Z's. Mids are a necessity to survial and Z amps have extremely usable mids. It took me years to finally get it. John could have saved me a lot of time if I had him handy.

He saved mine, for sure. I'm very happy with my 10'' Gold.
