Since the Good Doctor, in his wisdom, gave us multiple speaker impedance taps, I was wondering if anybody has done any testing on Z-Lux response, tone, etc., using something other than the 8 ohm Dr. Z speaker with which the amp comes. I'm also curious to see if anyone has run the same model of speaker except in different impedance ratings and heard much of a difference. What I mean is if you plugged an 8 ohm Brand X speaker into the 8 ohm speaker jack, played it a while, then swapped it for another Brand X speaker in 16 ohms, plugged it into the 16 ohm speaker jack, what would the tonal differences be? Why did the Dr. choose an 8 ohm speaker as opposed to a 16 ohm one. Just curious. Cheers!

I've wondered about this subject as well. I assume the variety of outputs (or OT taps) is for versatility vice any sound preference. I've read articles that say 16 ohm speakers are going be a touch less bright due to increased number of turns around the voice coil (more copper weight), and more sterile. I've also read that higher loads like 16 ohms use more of the OT windings instead of the taps and hence deliver more "mojo". This seems to be one of those discussions where the number of variables is so great (kind of OT, brand and size of speaker, amp design, cabinet design, etc.) that experimenting with safe mis-matches until you find something you like is probably the only way to know. Anyone else have any knowledge?

I can't really answer any of your questions but my new Z-Lux 1x12 combo came with a 16 ohm speaker. I eventually bought an 8 ohm Z12 speaker and swapped it out with the 16 ohm speaker so I could match it up better with a Z 8 ohm extension cab into the 4 ohm tap on the Lux...

Thanks for the replies! I recently got an 8 ohm Fat Jimmy C1270 and installed it. I'm going to give it a proper try-out at tomorrow's gig and report back.

I think he generally chooses 8 ohm because it's matches with cabs better...like said above. But to me lower Ohm speakers seem slightly cleaner. So 4Ohm vs 16 Ohm...the 16 Ohm might break up a tad more.....or maybe it's a tad more compression in higher Ohm.
Not an expert just thinking out loud.

Howdy all. I directly A/Bd the Fat Jimmy C1270 vs. the stock Z-12 speaker on stage last night, and the Z-12 is staying. Nothing wrong with the Fat Jimmy. In a pure Fender circuit, I might even prefer it, but with the Z-Lux, the Z-12 is (and I recognize these are all very subjective observations) richer sounding, with sweeter, more robust mids, and MUCH more articulate bass response. And, for the record, I've always played American voiced speakers (got plenty of stage time with vintage Jensens, CTS, etc.). I've read the Z-12 is voiced like the oft-maligned Oxfords of the mid-60's era (can anybody corroborate that?), but I don't know if I'd make that comparison. It really has its own thing going on, and is, IMO, perfectly voiced to compliment the Z-Lux. Cheers!

Hard to beat the Z-12 speaker.

I'd definitely look at the Warehouse Guitar Speaker G12C/S. It's magical in that amp.
