I have been checking demos of this amp and thinking of getting one. Currently have a deluxe reverb reissue which I've had for a few years, and would like to change things up. Would the Cure sound too similar to a deluxe reverb I'm a hobby player, jam with friends occasionally, has anyone played both amps ??

Nope, as in they do not sound alike.

You are getting the Z sickness....you need a CURE!
Welcome to the forum.
Deluxe reverbs are nice amps....no doubt about it. I played a gig last summer and was required to use a DR in the backline. I was surprised I liked it so much. I'm sure if I A/B'd it against one of my Z amps, the Z would have been the chosen one. The Cure should have a little extra of everything.
I have not played a Cure (too new of a production) but have played and owned/gigged many Z amps. I could never go back to a mass production amp. The quality and tone are worth it to have a Z.
The Cure should have DR tones...and so much more. Especially some crunch if you want it...more than a typical DR has. But the tone, harmonics, and dynamics will be better than the DR.
The DR is $1100...and the Cure is $1400. That $300 is the best 'extra money' you will EVER spend.

The Cure is not a Deluxe RI in tone. With reverb in the effects loop you can get some Deluxe flavors.....but much more than that is in the Cure. Also the Cure will have a tighter bass response and much more sustain in single notes.
Plus the LEVEL knob will make home playing not be so hard on the ears.
A great amp.

...i've been AB ing my Cure and vintage 65 DR lately....running them through a Z12 in an extension cab to get a good comparison...you can get a Cure close to the Deluxe but there are a lot of tones in the Cure that you will never get close to with a Deluxe....if i get to keep just one its the Cure for sure....its definitely a one of a kinder like so many of Docs are....

How do you set the Cure for Deluxe RI style tones? I kinda put MIDS & BASS low (9o'clock) with Treble up near noon....what are you doing? ZVerb in the loop really helps.

I take the mids completely out run that master wide open. Volume at about 12-1 treble and bass at 1 level to what ever is comfortable with my ears at the time. That gives me close to a black face tone. Playing with a strat as well.

Yes you do DR.Z How can you go against the Doctor's orders! ha ha Having owned a dozen Z amps I will say they are worth every penny. They all have their own voice but have the Z signature Mojo. Great cleans, over drive in their own way and all seem to take pedals just wonderfully. The Cure is no exception. I own its big brother the Z Lux. Great amp! enjoy the ride . . . . . God bless, Todd

I recently sold my long standing '72 Deluxe Reverb after I bought my Cure. The two amps differ mainly in that the DR would stay cleaner louder, but as I have the Maz and Ghia as well I realised I had no further use for it. I also felt I prefer the reliability of a well built modern amp, though that DR realistically has years of life left. It was a reluctant sale, but had to be done. I can get quite sparkly and blackfacey cleans with my Cure at lower volumes with my Strat or Tele; not the same as with the Deluxe, but close. Guitars with humbuckers will overdrive the amp sooner, but it responds well to picking attack. My 335 really sings through the Cure, more so than it did through the Deluxe. The Cure has the advantage of being around 14 pounds lighter, and is a lot more versatile. I would say that the Cure is a much more home-friendly amp because of that level control, and every guitar I have tried through it just sounds right. And of course compared to a DRRI the build quality is on a whole different level. So....it's a no brainer really!

Yes, I agree with everyone. The Cure is similar to the Deluxe R in that it seems to always sit well and cut well no matter where I'm playing. Plenty of power for small clubs IMO. But sound wise it's different.
The Cure doesn't have reverb, so it may seem much more dry in a living room setting unless you run a reverb pedal.
Where the Cure really outshines the DR I feel is in the EQ, power knob, and the way it sounds great at low volume and takes pedals well. Seems like my DR really sounded best in a gig, but the Cure sounds good anywhere on the volume knob.
Finally, the Cure is more versatile by far I feel like. I have been able to pull thick cleans, thin cleans, and pleasingly organic (not harsh) breakup out of it.
Good luck on your search!

Reverb at home= cool Reverb at a gig= mud
I know I'm generalizing, but reverb gets lost at a gig. Once you've got a bangin' drummer and bass player makin' all their noise, you'll never miss the reverb. Until you turn the reverb up so loud you can actually hear it, but by then, it makes things very muddy.
I used reverb as a 'special effect'...only to be used in certain patches of certain songs. Otherwise, leave it off.
(unless you're in a California surf band)

I do miss it, but really only in the living room type of space.

the thing about blackfaces is that they are great canvas' for great pedalboards. with my Deluxe reverb or princeton reverb i am running the amp clean with a base od pedal and another one or boost on top for leads.
the cure picks up at deluxe plus base od tone and does it more naturally than a deluxe with a great drive pedal as your base rock rhythm with an included boost pedal that bypasses the tone stack giving you more clarity than a deluxe reverb plus base pedal plus solo boost pedal.
oh, and it has that dynamic touch sensitivity thing that you get with a tweed deluxe but with a great eq and a double master volume setup. oh and it works great with the master up and the preamp gain down as a pedalboard platform like you would use a deluxe reverb.
so its the perfect fender style amp for almost any situation imo
