Hello all. I just picked up a used CG in a trade. It's my second Dr. Z amp. I had a Maz 18 NR several years ago. I was surprised at how heavy it was but l guess all Z's are "robust". It currently has an Eminence Cannabis Rex in it. I have an Eminence Tonkerlite neo lying around and l could take several pounds off the amp if l installed it. How do you think that speaker would work in a CG?

Welcome!
I don't think anyone here has discussed that speaker that I recall.
To me weight is very important on an amp, or guitar for that matter.

I've got a Tonkerlite. It works great in a Ghia. I have the Eminence Lil' Texas NEO also. It sounds great in the Gia too.

Welcome to the Forum - a lot of good people and information here. If Eric says it's a good speaker for the GC, you can take that to the bank.

Not that it matters so much in light of Eric's opinion, but I couldn't agree more. Although I love both these speakers in a variety of amps, in the Ghia I might have a slight preference for the Tonkerlite. A tad more British-ish if you will. And welcome aboard!

If your Carmen Ghia is a regular 1x12 combo and it's not brand new (he's using lighter cab construction starting this year), then yeah it's gonna be a bit on the heavy side compared to what you might be expecting. "Robust" is a good way to say it--I'd like to think Doc spared nothing, including weight considerations, when chasing the best tone. Though, I suspect things have caught up nowadays, as he has recently put some lighter/less-heavy cabinet construction into production.

Also: certain things are not going to be the fault of the cab, but rather inherent in Doc's amp/chassis. For instance, he uses really nice, over-engineered/robust output transformers, which tend to be quite heavy compared to those in other lesser-quality amps.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I'm glad to know my Tonkerlite will be a good fit. I have neos in all my amps and cabs, now. My 60 year old back ain't what it used to be and I can't afford a roadie, lol.

Has anyone compared any sound differences in the lighter cabs?

If you've got a spare speaker laying around...there's no loss to installing it and seeing if you like it. The only person who can tell if it's good is you.

It very funny to me all the talk of lighter cabs. When we are dealing with a 1x combo. 2-3 pound i don't notice. But i was use to moving a super reverb around!!! And small combo is an easy move to me. Or just get a small dolly:)
