Hello all,
This might be the wrong place to post this but I couldnt find a general topics thread. Additionally I will confess that Im already fairly settled on my next amp purchase, however, Im buying in about a month and I tend to obsess a little before making a buy.
This is my question: what amp would you consider to be the best amp in the docs line up as a gig volume pedal platform amp. I was looking at the m12 but I just cant see that holding up with the hammer heads I play with. Decent clean head room at a healthy volume is the goal. Im thinking the amp would need to be between 35-50 watts. I already have a Z-Lux combo which is great for this but I was looking at getting a head to go with my 1x12 and would like to get a different flavor of Z. Right now Im kind of ont the fence between a Maz 38 and a Route 66 and am leaning towards the route 66 because I believe I can also put I brake on it and get a beano tone.
Im only driving a single 12". I have become a believer in the 1x12. I have a variety of speakers on hand and will test a variety of speakers with a given amp, celestion gold, g12h75, red fang, private jack, greenback, swamp thang, lil texas, legend... Surprisingly my favorite speaker so far has been the Legend. That is the last thing I would have expected but it wins in a majority of side by side comparisons. The lil texas is pretty awesome too. I think I just like a clear top end.
Thanks

Which Legend speaker is it that you like? (I know there's several different ones of them.) I assume the Legend is in your Z-Lux combo cab and you'd be possibly using another head on top of the combo.. both feeding into the 1x12 combo speaker? (This can be done fairly easily on the fly with a Radial Headbone, for instance.)
The MAZ 38 is a wonderful, versatile "clean headroom" amp for sure. However, I think it might end up being too similar to your Z-Lux--they do share roughly the same pre-amp circuit, after all. Some amps that I think would be noticeably different & contrast against the Z-Lux would be maybe the Monza, DB4, or yes the Route 66. I really can't say if any of these would be right for you, but I do know they'd be quite a contrast from the Z-Lux's tonal palette.

I don't know what it is but I think it probably shares some DNA with the Legend. The Legend I have is the 1258 I believe. Sorry, not able to look at it at the moment. I've read in posts, and you definitely can't believe everything you read, that the Legend is the generic speaker Fender uses in most their amps that most people replace. Hence, not very good. However I have to disagree with this statement. I have had numerous Fender amps and none of the speakers seemed to me to be this very speaker. Of course I'm basing this off personal observation but I believe it to be the case. That's why I say it's surprising that I found I liked it so much, but I do. Thanks for the advice. I pretty much already settled on the Route 66 for these very reasons but I wanted to hear some other opinions. I use the Z-Luz as a standard combo. It was a purchase of practicality as much as geekyness. I guess I get easily board, I like to have some variety. My plan with the 1x12 was to get a few different heads and be able to swap around speakers for variety. That being said it also needs to be a reliable back up in case something goes belly up on the Z-Lux. I believe in spare amps and spare guitars. Last thing I want to do on a gig is mess with hardware problems.

I love my Maz18 - still wish I had held onto my 38 though - can't imagine playing many places where that thing would need to be mic'd to stay clean. ;-)

You might want to look into a used Dr Z Mazerati. They are usually very well priced and have all the clean headroom you would ever need. 35 watts of power and 2 knobs.

The KT45 might also interest you.
Although its ef86 tone stack and unique treble and bass controls offer a lot of drive capabilities, by the time you get to that point it is very loud. As such, I use mine principally with my Heritage arch top for jazz through either a 1x12 or 2x12 cabinet (depending on venue) - it's that clean.

You can't go wrong with anything with a Z on it!
