I have an older Maz 18 reverb with two tens. It used to be my main amp for years. Cut thru the mix like a knife! For the past few years i have been using a Tungsten Crema Wheat (Tweed Deluxeish).
Any way, i want to bring back the Z for a new project. Thinking of shipping it to Z for a look see under the hood. Also considering the mod to the "current voicing".
Could someone speak to the sonic difference of the voicings? Also, what are the component changes? caps/resistors etc....
Thank you.

Also considering the mod to the "current voicing". I am not familiar with this... The only mods I know are the tone stack bypass..and a few others that shouldn't effect tone. (additional ohm output jacks, reverb on/off...things like that) Also... I don't believe there's any difference in older/newer models. Doc may have had to alter things a bit to make them UL (underwriter lab) compliant. But that shouldn't effect tone or feel/dynamics. Unless you mean your maz was so old it was a reverb model. (before the non reverb was available) The NR model has a little bit more gain than the reverb models) Both NR and reverb models are available now.

Ok, I must have misunderstood something. Mine is old, before the no reverb was an option. I thought I heard somewhere that the reverb and nr maz jr had been changed a bit.

The voicing has been tweaked over the years from my understanding. I don't know how though.

Under the Used Amp Repair section on the web site, there is:
Amp Updates (older models with attached AC cord) Bring your used amp up to current voicing specs. Price includes parts, labor and QA.
On the Max 18 reverb, this is a $199 update.
What does this update cover and what are the audible differences?

I'd suggest you email the repair dept at Z amps and they can give you a detailed explanation of the update.

I'm not sure of the exact component changes but when I inquired about the mod a few years ago I was told by Z headquarters:
"- Voicing changes including: bass reduction, increased clarity, reduction in DC filtering ( increased sensitivity )"
I had a 2007 MAZ jr I bought new and then later had a MAZ Jr with the current voicing. I did notice the differences but either one still sounded amazing to me and I would've been completely happy with either one.

Does anyone know when this change in voicing occurred? I have a 2o12 Maz 18nr.

The "reduced filtering" part is interesting. I sent my 2002 model to Z for a once-over back around 2008 I would guess. I'd swear at that time they said that the then-current models had more filtering for less noise, whereas ones from my era were known for being a little looser due to lower filtering. (I kept it original).
I wonder if they increased filtering at some point, then decreased it again? Of course I could also be remembering this totally incorrectly.
