I love the smell of tolex in the morning! The clarity, the muscle, the thump, the drive, the touch sensitivity, it's all here. I parted with my Maz to snag this amp, now I think I'm going to be parting with the amp below it, too. I just don't need it anymore. Crank the DB4 up to 10 with a Lester Paul and it sings like a wall full of Marshalls. Roll the guitar volume back, or the amp volume back, and this has the most musical edge of break up tone I've ever heard in an amp. That 5879 up front is just magical. I haven't even plugged a Tele or Gretsch in just yet, I can't seem to put down the Les Pauls. I've run this through an American 12" speaker, a 2x12 Greenback Cab, and a cab loaded with an Austin Speaker Works KTS70 (G12H30-ish) and it absolutely slays with all of them. Did I mention it takes pedals well? Even cranked! No mush whatsoever. I'm really enjoying the full power mode, cut straight up, tone in position three and the volume over noon.

I knew I was going to regret opening this thread! Someone pass the Tums, GAS us killing me! You'll end up spending more money on Tums... I think I posted elsewhere on this forum that I was not a fan of EL84's for medium to higher gain. I retract that statement. I've looked inside the amp four or five times now. Yep, those are EL84's!!!

Hey Frank - I find myself adjusting the tone click based on the pickups I use. For HBs - position 2, p90s - position 3 & for single coils - position 4. Not a hard and fast rule, but I find it's a good place to start with any "new" guitar. YMMV, of course. Congrats on your new awesome amp. I'm glad there are others joining me in tone nirvana with this mean little sucker! Oh yeah - just wait until you try it with a Tele!

The DB4 has quite a charming appeal....the click tone knob, the 20/40 switch, the cool tones I've heard from all the demos. Congrats on this sweet amp.

Man, I had a hard time putting the guitar down tonight. I'm sure the neighbors are loving me. The DB4 really inspires you to just leave it cranked and ride that guitar volume the whole time. I really enjoyed hitting the front end with a Klon or the Z Drive to give it that over the top lead boost.
This being my sixth Z Amp, there is some recognizable DNA in this box. I hear some Monza in there, I hear some Maz in there, there are even some Therapy tones lurking in there, too. It's been a long time since I owned a Matchless DC30, but I'm even reminded quite a bit of the second EF86 channel without the daggers through your eyeballs effect Matchless is known for. I can see a lot of people being very happy with a DB4.
Therapy, Z Lux, DB4, Cure, they just keep getting better and better...

Nice review, thanks for sharing. I've managed my gas for both DB4 and Cure, but it wasn'y easy. You're not helping!

The volume knob seems to be set just about perfect in your photo. That's a fine looking rig.

Had a little time today. I did the Frank thing. You know, up to 11? Glorious Then I tried the DB4 in Stereo with the Ray. Man o man! I will do my best to get any kind of recording of that. Sounds immense! Anyways, wanted to echo Frank's original sentiments - what an amp the DB4 is - especially when cranked! đ¤

I never was a huge fan of the C Gold, but with the DB4, it sure is sweet. I ran two 1x12's this weekend, one with a ASW KTS70 and the other with the C Gold..... Jawdropping!!! And immense!!!

I love the DB4 with the gold. I also, once in a while, steal the blue loaded 2x12 that my Ray sits on and play through that. That's also a very nice sound! I'd like to hear it through a Wreck loaded cab to see what it's like with one gold and one blue....

Heâll be back. If I recall he did say the db4 was his favorite Z amp and that he would never sell it. So the way I see it he owes it to the amp to return đ. Welcome aboard though mojo, I hope you enjoy your new db4. I was playing through the z28 and db4 last night and noticed how Robust the db4 sounds. Had to of been the big bottle tube effect lol. Love it with a Reverb pedal and Tumnus Deluxe.
