I've recently ordered a Maz 38nr head to go with my open back 2x12 cabinet. I am going to pick up a 1x12 cab for use on small stages or small gigs and was wondering what speaker would you all recommend.
I'm looking for something with thick mids and a mellow top end (not a fan of bright speakers). Would prefer something with efficiency below 100db.

Maybe a WGS G12cs
It takes some off of the high end
Pretty efficient, though
Reasonably priced

Creamback M. 97db....it allows you to crank the amp a little more. Just turn down the Cut knob a little more. Lots of mids. I don't know if I would call it bright, but I don't know your definition of bright speaker.
Otherwise, I would recommend you look into speakers that have a hemp cone. Definitely a darker speaker.

With my own Maz 38 I've just switched from a Celestion alnico Gold at 100db to a Creamback M at 97db, as John suggests. The lower efficiency means I can turn the amp's master up and make the amp work harder, and I've also found I can effectively use the eq controls over a wider range. The Gold is a magnificent speaker, and at first I wasn't sure about the Creamback but I'm gradually really getting to like it. It's less strident, a bit softer in its response, kind of warmer sounding which complements the Maz's naturally bright tonality. It can still sound bright if you want it to, but in a nice way. It can sound a bit more raw than the Gold, and I'm finding that my drive pedals, (KOT, OCD and KTR), work really well with it, with the KTR in particular sounding fuller and not so middly. I found the Gold sometimes had a hard nasally edge to it with drive pedals, but the Creamback is kind of more natural sounding. The more I use it the more I like it. I'm not sure if I would absolutely define it as having the thick mids and mellow top end which you describe, but its warm and woody character definitely goes well with that amp, and of course you can experiment with the amp's eq.

I have to give a big +1 to the Creamback 65. I've had the Maz 18 R but never ran my Creamback with it. I run a Creamback 1X12 Z Convertable cab with my Therapy and Ghia. I love this speaker cab so much that I bought a second one. I now understand enough about this speaker to know that it will pair really well with the Maz.
I also have a 2X12 open back Z cab with the G12h30 and the Vin 30. This cab never gets touched. Maybe I need to get rid of it but shipping this monster would kill me. It's really pretty and looks great in my music room so keeping it doesn't bother me either. If I want to have a 2X12 I just run my two Creamback cabs together.
