Hey, new the forum and Dr z. Bought a maz 18 nr head a while ago and love it. Now I have a chance to buy one of these amps for about the same price. I play at home mostly and a bit with some friends, nothing big. Looking for another Dr z to compliment the maz, give a different flavor so to speak. I can't find either to play locally. Just looking for some thoughts from people who have experience with both. Have an air brake but am concerned that the route might still be too loud for me, or more importantly my wife. Would love to hear other suggestions too. (Ghia maybe?) Thanks. Ps. Play mostly rock and blues type stuff. Single coil and humbucker. Fenders gretsches and Gibson.

Team Z28 here. Great amp for sure and at many sound levels...and loves pedals so there is that. Been a long time since I had my Rt 66 and it was a good amp for sure but really liked to be loud.

The Rt66 is a great amp. Big bold notes. It can and will get loud. Your air brake will help when you want to crank it up, but there is nothing wrong with the sound of it at lower volumes. As for the Z-28 I have never owned one or played one so I am not qualified to comment, but I bet the fun factor is equivalent, just different.

I've had both. For me it was the 28. A bit more Fender american sound. I liked the highs on the 28 more. The Ghia with a Celestion blue is a pretty sweet. The 66, 28 or Ghia work well for blues & rock.

Got a lot of info from the board and I made the only rational decision a person can make, I got the z28 and a ghia!!!! Figured the 66 was just a bit much for my needs. Though in the future I will probably get one and/or a remedy or what ever else I can talk myself into!!!

I've had a Z-28 and a route 66. They both share the same preamp...which is VERY different than any/most other amps out there. And they're very different than a Maz jr.
First off the 28/66 have big bottles in the power section. They sound very different than el84's found in the Maz.
Second, the 28/66 have an ef86 as the preamp tube. This tube reacts VERY differently than a 12ax7. More dynamic range. Some people find it hard to get used to. If you are a sloppy player, it will show it. There's no place to hide. But on the other side, that can be a good thing. The touch, feel, sensitivity are all very different from the maz.
The 28/66 also sound a bit different than the maz. There's a bit more of a lower mid focus to the amps.
And if you play mostly at home, you'll need the airbrake for sure! Also, if you play mostly at home, get the Z-28. You don't need the extra power of the 66.

I think these 3 will give me a lot of range and sounds. Also have an air brake. I think the general consensus was the 66 would be a bit much...but it may not stop me later. Also looked at a remedy.

Got my Ghia today, only spent a little time with but it has a lovely nastiness to it that I am digging.

"Lovely nastiness..." I like that description! Every once in a while I come up with something good. I do think it applies, has an edge but in a good way. Played it with a les Paul tonigh, hell of a combo.

When you get your Z-28...hook up the airbrake...then set all three amp knobs to 3 o'clock. Use this as a starting point. Lots of Z-28 players just leave the amp at the 3-3-3 setting.

Z-12 is great. Celestion Alnico Cream is great. Can't remember if I have tried too many others.
