The NOS in my 8 gave out and while the GTEL84s I had lying about is filling in,albeit without the sweet mids I had previously, I'm about to get a permanate replacement. Now, if I replace the NOS with a standard JJ EL84, what can I expect as far as Tonal changes?? Thanks

I should mention, the JJ's are easily grabbed at my regular music stores where the NOS will probably be an online hunt/wait.

Doc seems to have leaned heavily on the JJ EL84's for a while, so they must be pretty darned good in his designs. I would have no fear going with those. I also tend to like the E-H's, as they're just a touch softer/less-intense, at least to my ears; some say these sound more like the old Russian ones.

They're fine. They just last nowhere near as long as the 6p14ps we're getting these days. Sonically, they're probably a bit harsher and louder but probably nothing my untrained ear could make out in a blind test or I couldn't compensate with EQ unless you get a really off pair. Which you always might with current production tubes...
