so I changed out the tubes in my carmen ghia per Docs specs and installed a nos 5751 in V1 and put in a nos 5V4 rectifier. I went to hook up the brakelite and noticed in the back that the rectifier was glowing along with 1 el84 glowing as well, the other el84 was dark and not glowing, does this mean that the non glowing el84 needs changed and is dead? the amp was plenty loud and sounded ok but wondering if I should change out the non glowing el84?

im assuming I had a bad el84 as I changed them out with a new set and now both el84s and the rectifier have a nice warm glow to them.thays not as bright.

Good lesson on why to always have extra tubes (and fuses). Glad it was a simple fix!

How do you like the 5V4 ? How much difference is it to the 5Y3? Thanks, Jim

You put the 5751 in V1?
I put mine in the PI. (In older Ghias...that's where it went.)

I did put the 5751 in the v1 as doc suggested in another post but I do want to try it in the v2 as well as you have suggested to see if there's much of a difference. My ghia is a 2016 so I don't know if that will make a difference in the v1 vs v2 or not? Any idea?

Thanks for the info. Anyone else tried this switch? Jim

But I think Doc now made the adjustment and now the PI is designed for 12ax7. So given that, if I had a 5751, I would put it in v1. My ghia was a 2011...and it was meant for a 5751.

No problem swapping the 5751 for the 12AX7 in any position or visa versa . If one will work in a position in an amp the other will work fine. You can swap any 12A?7 or its equivalent for any other. Might not sound good, but it won't hurt the amp. Stevie Ray ran 5751s in his Fenders in place of 12AX7s regularly. I've been running a 5V4 in a ghia for more than a year now. Before that I ran a 5AR4 which tightened it up even more and to me made it a little Marshally since there was less sag. The 5AR4 may have shortened the life of the EL84s a bit but the amp seemed to be fine with it. I've played three 1 1/4 hour sets in a night with both and things were fine.

My CG tube chart says a 5751 in V2 as well, I just went and changed it around and put the 5751 in V2 and a tung sol ax7 in V1, and I actually had a little more break up than the other way and it didn't sound quite as good to me, so I swapped it back out per docs specs in his post to the 5751 in V1 and ax7 in V2 and it sounds great! I'd like to try one of those 12BH7 tubes in there as well.

Glad you got it straightened out Bloozeman. Now that you have both rectifiers, you might try swapping them out back to back to hear the difference. I keep both an NOS 5Y3 and 5V4 ready to go to change the amp a bit if needed.
