I've been gassing for speakers lately. I've never had an Alnico speaker, but they sure do sound smooth in the demos I've watched.
I was curious if any of you guys have tried or use Alnico speakers with your Galaxie.

Roger I had a Z-Best cab loaded with Weber P12Z alnicos. Sounded good especially with a Strat. i would like to try one in my Z 1x12 though. i seem to remember T-ROCK saying Celestion Gold or Weber 50w Blue Dog in an open back cab.

Been a long-time fan of the Z 10's .... and haven't really had much time outside of them and the V30 ....but would give a try to alnico's if I had the time (and budget) And, as mentioned above I seem to recall T-Rock mentioning the Gold's and/or Blue Dogs cheers always Joel

I think it may all depend on what kind and/or how much distortion you want from the speaker. The amp can have all sorts of personalities depending on this aspect of speaker choice. I am curious too about the Alnico variations out there, but am so please with my ceramic in the Z 1x12 cab I stop looking.

So did you land any alnico speaker(s) ?
Cheers always

Hey Joel. I haven't bought one yet, but I'm still planning on buying one to experiment with. After I get one, I'll provide a review.
I've been using a Marshall 4x12 cabinet with V-30 and G12H-30 speakers in a "X" patern with my Gal. Nothing wrong with that sound at all. I'm just looking for a little warmer, more vintage tone. I was thinking I'd try combining a Alnico with a V-30. Maybe the best of both worlds. Maybe crap too......LOL

Update: I got a Fane Ascension A60 Alnico. I did some experimenting with the speaker in a 1-12 open back cabinet last night. It sounded good right off the bat, though it's not broken in yet. It's my first Alnico, so I can't really compare it to others. My bass player and I both thought it sounded great with the Galaxie (without a lot of tweaking).
I played a few riffs with a looper and then we stood back and listened to it. My initial thought was it sounded warm and vintage, with nice mids. I played it with a V-30 in a 1-12 open back cabinet too. The speakers seem to sound pretty good together. Possibly better than the V-30 / G12H-30 combo.

I think a alnico speaker is a good fit for the Galaxie. Makes it sing.

The G12-65 is what Joe Walsh used in his (ask me how I know ). Yea, I saw pictures of your Galaxie Proto. That's a sweet amp! I tried a G12-65 for a while. I never really bonded with it. Though there's a sweet spot with the Galaxie and that speaker. But to me, it didn't seem to sound as good as the V-30 for good tones from clean to mean. I'm not selling my G12-65 though. I like to experiment in the studio with different cabs, speakers and mics. I've laid down a couple tracks with the 65 that sound pretty good.

Weber AlNiCo 50w Blue Dog/Silver Bell in a small open back is my fave with the Galaxie... and I have lots of unique choices here. My second fave is using the speaker section of my late 60s SF Twin with JBL D120s. Also AlNiCo. When I really want to wail... A 70s 1x15 JBL D130 gets the nod. Again, AlNiCo. This amp, by design, is based on a tweed Super that never was, but should have been, and IMHO, the old tweeds sound best with some AlNiCo flavor.

You guys have pushed me down a rabbit hole... I got an Eric Johnson strat a couple weeks ago, and have spent the past 3 days setting it up. Oh, the action/intonation were perfect from the git. What I'm talking about is the pickup height/angle. HUGE difference every 1/8th turn of the adjusting screws (Probably because they're countersunk per EJ's specs. He says that makes a tonal difference... ummm yeah..).
I haven't played a Strat in several years, nor have I fired up the Galaxie since I got the Wreck 3 years ago. I decided I would work with what I know best to adjust this guitar's sound. Out of sheer laziness, I ran the Galaxie thru a 90s Fender Custom Shop Vibro King 2x12 with well broken in V30s, since that was what was plugged into the "OUT" of my Weber Z-Matcher. Invaluable box for my situation, since the Galaxie only has a single 8 Ohm out. This thing will allow you to to choose ANY output value from the amp, and run it to ANY input value cab.
High double digit hours, and prolly triple digit pickup adjustments later... I decided to heed my own advice, and swapped 1 cable to go from the closed back V30 cab, to the SF Twin cab w/60s JBL D120Fs. WHOA!!! 10 minutes later, I'm done.
The moral... Yeah, the Galaxie really IS a tweed Super that never was, but should have been. Open back AlNiCo all the way for 'Ol T-Rock. Peace & BBQ!!
