So...
I recently traded an amp I really liked, for a Therapy (Thanks fishman). I had the amp for a few days but with no chance to play it. Today, I had the chance to finally fire it up and like my title say...WOW. What a nice amp, so smooth and fat, are the two first words that comes to mind. I knew I would love the clean tones of this amp but didn't expect to be blown away that much by the dirtier tones. It is making me rethink my feelings towards 6L6's. Not that I didn't like them, but not my favorite type of tubes. It goes to show that the amp design, often more than the types, has the bigger impact on the tone. I am still experiencing with it but I really couldn't stop playing it, I like it that much.
Now comes my tube questions. I always like to tweak and experiment with the amps I have and although this amp is greast the way it came stock, I wanted to try some NOS tubes in it. I had a nice old mullard CV4004, that I tried in V1, again, another wow, I liked the dirty even better, so smooth... Now I have a question for the rectifier. I know it's a 5AR4 that is in it now, but I have one or two nice NOS 5U4 GB, so do you think it could work ? I just don't want to mess too much with the amp. I have tried it in other amps that used GZ34 (or 5AR4) and I know that it'S more regarding the SAG, but I want to make sure it is safe.
Let me know what you guys think

So I have not yet tried it but basically, my question was anyone tried a 5U4 GB instead of the 5AR4 ?
Maybe I should ask this in the technical section...

I don't own a Therapy, but my thought would be it may need to be re-biased. Unless someone chimes in with expertise I would shoot an email to the shop!

From what I understand from the link dcarver gve me, doc posted that it would be safe to use a 5U4 gb in pretty much any Z amps. His opinion is that it tends to sound better in 6l6/KT66 design, so it should work with the Therapy. Also I read that if the amp is FIXED bias there may be need to re-bias but the Therapy is cathode bias so it should all be good. I won't have a whole lot of time before the end of the weekend, but as soon as I try it, i'll report back
