I have recently purchase a brand new MAZ JR loaded with a Tone Tubby which I think have an excelent overall tonality. However, I have got the idea that it is hard for the MAZ JR to drive...
I own a 4 ohm Fender extension 2 x 12 cabinet (for my Vibro King) loaded with Celestion Vintage 30. I have tried it on the JR and they seems to be much more sensitive than the Tone Tubby: They sounds so much louder (and of cause also with another tonality). So freinds, my questions to the forum are; which speaker(s) do you use and, in case you have made any speakerchanges; which and what is your opinion..???
By the way....I think it is an aMAZing amp...I'm crazy about the THANG...

well, if the cab is 2x12's that has a lot to do with why it sounds louder. adding an extra speaker is the easiest way to increase volume.
i have celestions in my z-best 2x12 and it sounds good. there is a v30 and a g12h in there. i like the combo. you know, adding a dr. z 1x12 extension cab would really open the amp up. but then again, a lot of folks use the 1x12 by itself and like the sound.
personally, i've always dug the beefy sound of the 2x12's.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The 2 x 12 closed box will almost always sound bigger and louder than a 1 x 12 open back combo. Perhaps a Celestion Century with the n-dym magnet might keep up with a 2 x 12 box because of it's great efficiency but tha's about the only speaker that would. I use a Tone Tubby alnico 12" in my Maz 38 Sr combo and I honestly feel it is a noticeable improvement over any 30 watt or greater Celestion. If I sold that amp the TT would not go with it.

Recently I figured out what made the trouble....the seller had installed a 16-ohm speaker instead of the 8-ohm which I thought I ordered... I sold the 16-ohm and purchase a new 8-ohm...no problem at all...the MAZ Jr. got plenty of punch. The Tone Tubby has a delicious mid range, a tight buttom and top that most Jensen speakers must envy... ;D So "billyguitar" I have joined your club...the TT is a sure keeper...

Your original TT may have been the original design that was supposedly darker. The TT is one hell of a rich sounding speaker. This is actually the first speaker I've ever had that didn't leave me wanting something else. Not because it's expensive either. That doesn't matter to me a bit, the tone is what counts.

The 16-ohm speaker was installed by the dealer in order to make the amp break up somewhat earlier...(cheap trick)...but the result was a very loose buttom when cranked-up...horrible... Both the 16-ohm and the 8-ohm had the same specification (except the impedance of cause)...both were H1E... Well in Denmark TT's are quite expensive, and still a very rare speaker...still mostly for nerds over here...

I have a TT H1E in my Hot Cat 30R combo and it was such a dramatic improvement over the Bad Cat modified Vintage 30, I can't even put it into words! I've been tempted to get a TT 2x12 for my Maz 18 NR head, but the G12H-30s (Made in England) in my existing Jenkins Highway 61 sound so damn good with the Maz (and especially the Fulldrive FD2 and OCD), I am reluctant. Running my Maz 18 head into the Bad Cat combo loaded with the TT H1E does not sound as good as the Jenkins/G12H-30 combo, but it could very well be the difference in cabs that is misleading me here.

So freinds, my questions to the forum are; which speaker(s) do you use and, in case you have made any speakerchanges; which and what is your opinion.. All the time while I was jonesing for a Dr. Z amp head and deciding that a Maz 18 would be the right fit for my playing style, I was trying to figure out what speaker cab I wanted to run with it. I have a 2 x 12 closed back with Celestion GT-75's I use with about anything, but I wanted something special. After a lot of investigation on this forum and several others, I decided to build an 8ohm open back cab with a 10" and a 12" speaker in it, hopefully the best of both worlds. I "borrowed" tone tubbys open back design with the oval hole in the back, and made only slight changes in size. I happened to have a 12" Blue Marvel (16 ohm) and a reconed Fender 10" (16 ohm) laying around, so I did several trial runs while building the cab, and it really sounded good. It took longer to build the cab 'cause I kept wanting to stop and play it. Then, as was planned from the gitgo, I ordered a Weber 10" Silver Bell (30W) and a Weber Blue Dog 12" (30W) to put in this cab. ( I haven't got these as of yet, Weber was back ordered on Alnico magnets and so at 3 1/2 weeks later I'm still waiting, and it can't be shipping, I could drive to Kokomo in an hour and a half. ) Anyway, I can't wait to get these, see if my design is going to work like I think it will, and post some sound bites on here. I did play the cab out with the Marvel and Fender speakers on Saturday, and it sounded nice. A friend of mine came up to ask about the rig during break, and wanted to know, "which one do you mic, the 10" or the 12" ?? Later...........weedman
