Doing some shopping. Looking for a set of pickups for a LP Custom. I have two Customs, both with the same fairly hot ceramic 490r/498t. Looking for a set of pickups that are not quite as hot and more mellow for one of the guitars. Blues, classic rock to hard rock. I'm interested in vintage flavored pups. So far I'm researching Wolftone Dr.Vintage, Dimarzio 36th paf's, Duncan Antiquities, Bare Knuckle Black Dog's....
Anything else I should consider? What say you?

Can't go wrong with the Wolfetone Dr Vintage set if you want old school woody but brightish PAF tone. l had a set come with an R8 l bought S/H but took them out when l moved the on R8 as l liked them that much and they now reside in my ES 335 fat neck. l have Bareknuckle PG blues in my silver burst custom which are basically the mule set but OOP on the middle setting and they are slightly lower output to the wolfetones but similar tonally. Difficult to assess what the wolfetones might sound like in my custom though as its naturally a bright guitar with ebony board and maple neck so l have an 047 cap on the bridge pickup with the bareknuckle set as it was too bright with a stock 022 or 033 cap ( bare in mind l had 550k pots fitted at the same time as the pickups as stock were 300k for volume and yes 100k tones)

Duncan Seth Lovers are a good vintage sound for the money, as are the DiMarzio 36ths that you mention.
I've never thought that spending hundreds of dollars more on some of the super-booteek models got you much farther down the road.

I hate to sound pedestrian , but I like Gibson '57 Classics for the sound you're describing.

I like the Duncan Antiques I put in my R8. They sound better to me than the Burstbucker 1 and 2 that came in it. ME

The stock pickups in my Guild Bluesbird are SD 59ers, which I like.
You also might consider a SD Jazz in the neck and a 59er or JB in the bridge.

I went with Lindy Fralin Pure PAF's for my LP Standard. While I was at it, I replaced all of the PCB based wiring harness.

I just replaced my 490/489s with Fralin Pure PAFs, also, in my LP Custom. Probably only the second time I have still felt good about pickup replacements a few weeks later. there was one mode I liked with the old set: middle position running very clean. Nothing else was very inspiring. Now the guitar really sounds good with either or both pickups. I went for the lowest resistance neck and bridge from the standard menu.
If I had had more dough at the time, I had seriously considered getting Throbacks, but I'm quite happy with my choice.

I had two sets of WCR's. Both great. If I were in the market for aftermarket HB's again, I'd go with his. Lots of good choices out there these days.

I hate to sound pedestrian , but I like Gibson '57 Classics for the sound you're describing. +1,000,000. There's a reason Gibson still installs these pups in their "way high end" guitars (like the Johnny A) with breath-taking results!!!! Combined with the right guitar, they can be the "Best of the Best!"

I would agree with sharking. I put a set of underwound (5%) Fralin Pure PAFs in my Les Paul and i won't be changing. They sounded fantastic in comparison to the stock Burst Buckers. I haven't heard the '57 Classics but the Fralin pickups were much better than the stock. Very happy!

I've been super happy with the Florence Voodoo '59's I have in my CR-8. They are brighter than the Burstbuckers that were in there when I got it. They sound a lot more like the pickups on a real '58 that I played a while back.

I love Sheptone Tributes and their Blue Sky set. Great stuff and great prices. Yep, I love the Tributes, too. Had them in an R8 I used to have, and just installed the in my Grosh Set Neck with great results.

I have really liked "Wizz" pickups and "OX4's". Between the two, I prefer the Wizz.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! First set to try out. The Duncan Joe B's. I went with double black, although they shipped with the nickle covers separate. Pretty amazing pickup's. I really like them very much. Quite beautiful sounding. Supposedly clones of his vintage LP "principle skinner". I also ordered a pair of 57' classics as well. I'm going to give these Duncan's another week or so. Then try the Classics and pick the better of the two and call it a day.

From the information I've gathered, the 57 Classics are exact copies of the original Seth as it was actually designed on paper. Even windings on both bobbins. The Burstbuckers are Gibsons idea of how they were actually built in the field and have unevenly wound bobbins. I am very familiar with BB's in LP's and actually like them just fine. So it will be interesting to see how the classics compare.
In any event the Joe B's are stellar. Gonna be a tough act to follow for the classics.

I'm pretty much digging this double-black open coil look against the silver burst!!!!!! Thanks Lee. They offer them as double black, zebra , and aged nickel. I just thought the aged nickel covers would look silly on a new guitar? It was a happy accident and it does look pretty cool.

I installed the Gibson 57' Classic pups and spent a few days with them. They are very nice sounding, no doubt. But as much as I liked them, I felt like the Duncan's were a better match for me. So after a few days of getting adjusted to the sound of the classics I put the Skinner Burst's back in. They aren't coming back out....Ever. The difference is large and considerable. Both are great. For me the Skinner's are the ticket. No contest.
As for measurements the 57 Classics measured 7.76 and 7.97. The Skinner's 8.35 and 8.87. Not significantly hotter. The Classics hace alnico 2 magnets while the Skinners are A3. The best way to put into words is the Classics are more edgy, the Skinner Burst's sound rounder but still have that kick you in the chest thump. It's really hard to put into words. I've read Duncan uses aged "degaussed" magnets maybe that's it? In any event the Skinner Bursts sound excellent and will be staying. They are really special. They cover my needs which is dirty humbucker blues up to classic rock / hard rock. Super happy with them!

Glad to know you found a good fit. The frustration is over and you can get down to playing. Duncan has a great product line for sure.
