Might I recommend the Fulltone OCD? I love my DB4! But, it wants to play with completely different overdrive pedals then what my stingray likes. So naturally, I've been trying everything I can get my hands on. What I discovered is that most overdrive pedals find their heritage in the tube screamer. Yeah – that pedal with the wonderful mid hump. Except that the DB4 already has mids covered. Handily! So I've been searching for an overdrive pedal that doesn't have a mid hump that might work well with the DB4. Trust me, I tried a boatload of pedals (Full disclosure: I did not have the pleasure of being able to try out a Z drive though). Anyways, there's something about the EQ of the OCD that just works very well with the DB4. Perhaps the OCD has no mid hump, or a very mild one, but it just seems to work, especially in LP mode with humbuckers. With Single coils you can make either toggle position work well. Just wanted to give a heads up.

I really liked a plain ol' non-modded Boss SD-1 with the DB4, myself. Which I think is very similar to the OCD, in that they're both wider/flatter-response than the mid-bumped tube-screamer stuff. Just seemed to work well with the DB4's profile.

All of my pedals sound their best with the DB4. Jetter Jet Drive, Rockett Blue Note, Xotic SL drive.

Not sure what happened, but today EVERY pedal I try with the DB4 sounds good. Is it possible the speaker has started to break in already? I've put roughly 10 hours of play on it - at a "reasonable" volume (and by reasonable I mean volume at 3-4 - sometimes louder). Or is it possible after years of playing the Ray I'm just adjusting to the tone of the new amp?
Whatever the case, happy it's all sounding good! 😊

I tried a Timmy boosted by a Tumnus last night. Sounded really good into my DB4.

I noticed a very pronounced change in my 12" Gold @19 hrs. It actually stopped me in my tracks, it was such a "wow, there it is" moment. Haven't heard that happen to my 2x10 Golds yet, but if there was ever an amp to help them along - it's the DB4.

I've tried a handful with mine. The two that stand out are the Barber Gain Changer and the Xotic BB Comp. Primarily Strats, full power, Tone on 4, Cut 4-6.

Welcome to the Forum! A lot of good people and information here. I've got both pedals and you are correct - they sound great with the Gain Changer and the BB. All of Doc's amps take pedals great!

Gain Changer, Z Drive, Klon and Sunbender!!! The DB4 eats them all up...

Still having great success with the OCD and also, a Prince of Tone. Something about that PoT - I really dig what it does in the boost mode. Also my Shiba sounds pretty good too.

I really like my King of Tone with my DB4. Maxon 808 is pretty honky but works depending on the song. Zendrive is tough to dial in. Box of Rock is fun for Marshally stuff. Really noisy, though. With whatever the V1 does in terms of gain, it can get pretty grainy sounding fast if you don't keep the drive level down to a reasonable level.
I think the best overdrive is the amp on it's own, cranked up! SPL gets redonkulous. Going to try a THD Hotplate and see what happens.

I can run my Sunbender cranked into my cranked DB4, but I can't do the same with a Muff style pedal. The DB4's natural overdrive is about the best I've ever heard in a tube amp. But I still love sending it off the cliff with a little goose...

I was going to ask if anyone had the chance to run a KOT through the DB4 yet. I have a OCD V1.7 pedal currently which I do love. I'm on the KOT waiting list but then I stumbled on this Z-drive pedal today. Anybody wanna do a demo video of those 3 with the db4 lol? I like the option of being able to stack the KOT for boosting a solo on the gain channel.
