Stop me if you've heard this one.... So, i made two quick videos to compare a p90 les paul and a humbucker les paul through the ghia. Each videos shot straight through on my cell phone about 5 feet from the amp. I'm just noodling and switching pickups throughout. I try to cover similar sonic ground in each video Here is my 2010 gibson r8 and the 1x12 ghia w/ Celestion blue. Here is my 2002 les paul classic with p90s. **at 2:20, i talk briefly about how responsive the amp is to pick attack and touch.

Very cool stuff there, Poodle. I was surprised how much I really like the P-90 LP, but then again, that's the guitar I cut my teeth on. Love the buckered LP as well. And as usual, nice playing; very tasteful chops. I could listen to a cd of you noodling all day!!!

Nice comparison Ian - thanks for taking the time and sharing it with us! I like the growl from the bridge pickup on the R8.

Nice one, Ian. Thanks for sharing. Les Paul straight into a Ghia...... There's a lot to be said for keeping things simple!

There is really something magical to a rolled back volume knob on a P90 through an EL84 based amp w/ a Celestion Blue. Stunning.
I think I could be completely happy with just those two guitars and that amp. It would cover anything I would want to do.
Thanks for sharing that, Ian!

bonus track... this was the first video i shot with the R8 but i ended up not using it because the guitar was a bit out of tune.

mr. Bartee would be proud. I see those are "humbucker-sized" p-90's. are they gibson pups or replacements?

Nice thanks for sharing Ian. That R8 sounds so nice, but I have always had a soft spot for P 90's into a Ghia.

My fave was the R8, but I dug the Coppertop in the bridge 90 too. Above that , I really admire your playing Ian. Really.

Man! Nice playing. Your guitars all sound great. Are you plugged straight in, or going through pedal(s) ? I bet those instruments hanging up in the background sound pretty good too.. (hint, hint).

(hint, hint). they.. thanks. i'm plugged straight in on all the videos. In the strat video, I have the brakelite on "4" and the ghia is set as: Vol=2 o'clock; Tone=11 o'clock.

"Oh well" I have to ask why the aluminium demonstration ? Its intriguing . Goes to show how the Brake lite on 4 still lets the tone through.

Goes to show how the Bakelite on 4 still lets the tone through. ha... the Al-u-min-i-UM demonstration. i guess it's there because it caught my eye as the recording started and i wanted to share. it sounds much better (clearer tone and sustain) if it's suspended by a wire or string. it's just something i've had laying around for the past 25 years and i like to show it off....

Ian! Loved the vids and all the noodlin'! REALLY loved the aluminum thang - totally random - and I'd use that sound on a recording any day!!!!! It's the single coil Fender guy in me that really loved the sound of your strat through that Ghia. I'm loving the Ghia myself these days. With hearing protection in place, always now, of course!
call me if you come through Florida!
