Celestion Blue is my favorite with the Ghia. Worth the extra money. You will never look book on that purchase.

Is this an open back combo or a separate cab (open or closed back)? What are you looking for in the new speaker? The C Blue is a favorite and a lot of people like the stock Celestion V30 Doc puts in a lot of the combos. The answer depends on whether you want louder vs. quieter, brighter vs. warmer, etc. The possibilities are vast.

Howdy,
The 30 watt AlNico Silver bell (From Weber) is my favorite with my Ghia. What is it about the 50 watt version you don't like? What kind of tone are you seeking? What Guitars are you playing through your Ghia? Currently my 1x12 Dr.Z cab sports a Celestion blue, but I have a slight preference for the Silver Bell, which has more Bass than the C-Blue and is a more logical fit for those who prefer Fender Guitars. As I've posted here many times before, the C-Blue offers more tonal complexity than the Silver Bell and is ideal for Raunch and is also good for clean tones. I've found that the Alnico Silver Bell (30 watts) edges the C-Blue for clean tones.

My favorite(s) out of the roughly 2 dozen that I've tried/owned (yes, roughly two dozen different 12" speakers) are consistently (A) my Weber AlNiCo Blue Dog* (30 W, light dope) or (B) any of the smaller-magnet ("M" type) greenback-style speakers--this would be the Greenback or Creamback by Celestion, Scumback M75, or WGS Green Beret or ET65. 1x12 setup in an open-back cab works fine with all of these (though I know John would beg to differ).
*The trick I've noticed about my Blue Dog (not sure if they're all like this?) is that it shelves a ton of high-end; I mean, so much so that my Rx Junior Strength almost sounds "warm" with it--and that's not known to be a warm amp.

Looking for a warmer sound, the previous owner did like the speaker that came with the Ghia,, so swapped that for the silver bell which was in a Maz 18. Playing a tele through the Ghia.

Absolutely, a Celestion Blue. They were made for each other!

I love Weber Silver Bells, but as Don said, the Celestion Blue is THE Ghia speaker.

I picked up a Tone Tubby for my 1x12 open back cabinet. It is my favorite combination with my Ghia. I like a rounded top end and the Tone Tubby does a nice job of smoothing it out.

This forum, and you guys, are amazing. The timing of this thread was perfect for me right now. I just got John's Ghia in on Monday and have been playing it a ton - it's a 1-10" combo with the Celestion Gold. Amazing amp rig. Have been trying it through other cabs, too, of course and with a small gig coming up this weekend was trying to figure out whether to take a cabinet or not. I have a Dr Z 1-12 cab that had a Greenback in it and I didn't particularly like the sound of it over the 10" Gold. Was on the verge of dropping $289 for a 12" gold to put in there, but it wouldn't come in in time for the gig. Poof! Along comes this thread, and your suggestions that the Blue is the perfect speaker for this amp, and I just so happen to have a spare blue here at the house. A quick swap tonight confirms what you geniuses have said, it is a perfect match for this amp - sounds nearly the same as the 10" Gold except with a little more clarity and dimension with the extra surface area!
You guys saved me nearly $300 and I have an extra cab for the gig! What good fortune for this thread to come along just when it did.
Again, you guys are simply amazing.
Thanks you guys!!!!!! Nashman, great thread!

and to think my kids/wife say I'm a geek for hanging out here. they don't know squat. jj, I think your kids/wife are closer to knowing squat than what you think. geek (verb) 1. engage in or discuss computer-related tasks obsessively or with great attention to technical detail. By definition, we're not exactly geeks, but pretty close, I'd say. Zeeks, maybe? zeek (verb) 1. engage in or discuss Dr. Z-related tones obsessively or with great attention to technical detail. Yep, we're all zeeks. That's what we are.

Is the Weber Silver Bell you are using alnico or ceramic? Because that makes a major difference IMO.
I hated the 50w alnico with my ghia but loved it in my RXES. Hated the ceramic in my RXES but love it in my RXJR.

my favorite speaker with a Ghia is a 10" Greenback followed closely by the 10" Gold. Amazing together and light to carry my 2 cents, Todd

I use mine with a 10'' Gold, but I've had great results using a 12'' WGS G12C/S. It tames high frequencies a lot (which is a good thing for me) while keeping the clarity of the amp intact. It's an "american" voiced speaker but it matches very well with the CG.

I decided to get my Carmen Ghia head out and push it through Doc's 12 speaker in my Cure. Don't underestimate that speaker! I love the way a cranked amp sounds when it hits that speaker; both the Cure and Carmen Ghia. I will push my Maz Jr. head through it this weekend. Perhaps that speaker will give the Carmen Ghia a little more "american" flair.
