This may be a dumb question, but I had a tube go out on me this past weekend. I've never had to replace a tube before, so I'm not 100% sure on what I can and can't do tube-wise. I ordered what I thought were replacement JJ EL84's, but are actually EL844's. That extra 4 squeaked right by me. So my question is, can I use the EL844's with no worries? Will it change the tone significantly?

As long as you replace them as a pair, you can plug them in and play your amp. The EL-844 is a lower power version of the EL-84 tube.

Ok cool, I did get them as a pair. Thanks for the response!

I bet they'll sound different, or at least the perception will be different, due to the lower output. It's always good to have extra EL84s on hand- maybe from a few different brands. There may be times when you want to move the level where distortion begins or the smoothness of the sound- different brands break up differently.

I'm curious if a volume drop will be noticed? Or does lower power version imply something different?
