If you use a Brake Lite installed on a Maz 38 taken back 2 clicks...is it basically a Maz 18?!?

With about twice the power the Maz 38 is approximately 3 decibels louder than the Maz 18. 1 Click of Brakelite is 2 db; 2 clicks is 5 db; 3=8, 4=11. So it would be less than a Maz 18 actually. Here's a link to a Pro Guitar article if you want to calculate all this stuff yourself that. proguitarshop.com/andyscorner/how-loud-is-your-amp

I'd guess it would also sound a little different due to the 4 x EL84s.

I think you're right there Mike. My guess is more clean headroom because you're not pushing the tubes as hard.

Technically, just plugging into the low input cuts 3db and gets you down to about 18 watts, but...
They're very similar, but I could never get the 38 to produce the overdrive the 18 can. Brake Lite, same speaker, etc. I could get the 18 to produce cleans like the 38, however, eventually you will run out of headroom depending on volume.

So when people say the Maz 18 is a loud amp, they really aren't kidding!! I usually can't get away playing though my 38 without going 2 clicks down on my BL. The 38 is a lot of amp to handle!!

I had an 85 watt Mark IV when I purchased my 38. Through the same speaker, the 38 was noticeably louder. I ultimately moved the 38 to get an 18, and I still plug into the low input and use a Brake Lite pretty much all the time.
