Well, I've played with it now for about an hour with my main Telecaster. Let me start by saying I REALLY like bright amps.....All of Doc and Brads amp have pretty much been bright amps too: RxES, Stangray, Z-Wreck....Up until now....This is NOT a bright amp at all, not even with the cut all the way open. I hate to say it, but I made a huge mistake by selling my Z-Wreck to get the DB-4 But as far as how it actually sounds, It reminds me a lot of a thicker sounding Mazerati, which was also too dark for my liking. Even though all the demo's I've heard are of the amp being dirty, there is PLENTY of clean head room. It'll stay clean with a Tele up to about noon (pretty darn loud). When you crank it, it has some of the BEST crunch tones you'll ever hear out of an amp..VERY NICE!!...But unfortunately, I don't get the crunch form my amp and need a good clean tone/platform. I'm going to mess with it again later....But you might see it in the For Sale section sooner than later. No offense to Dr. Z, this amp just isn't what I was looking for.

I can see that someone that liked bright amps might not bond with the DB4.

I'll gladly take that dark amp off of your hands... What a gentleman! Seriously. But really, in all seriousness, I'd try a different speaker before I gave up on the amp. I don't like Alnico speakers and when I played a DB4 head at Chicago Music Exchange, I made sure I played it through a couple different speakers. You could sell the C Gold and get four Eminence speakers in its place...

I don't know....as a country-esque player with a Tele, if the amp doesn't work for telejas with a Gold or blues I'm not sure another speaker will get him there !

I did that with the Mazerati and Ghia, ended up spending too much time and money in speaker. I figure sometimes it's best to just cut your losses and move on to something you know works.

Sad for me to hear that S/N #3 didn't stick with you, a long time Z amp owner. I'm not sure what more I could have said in the description to define this as a Dark, Warm, Rich sounding amp, different from any EL 84 amp you have ever played. Also this exact amp was excellently demoed by Chris at Matts Music, and it did expose the amps true nature IMHO.
I build many Bright Jangly VOX type amps, as you know from the Z Wreck, the DB 4 is a departure from that sonic foot print by design. I have been following your posts on many forums through the years, maybe an Original 60's VOX AC 30 will end your quest.

Z I should have stopped with the Z-Wreck....That is THE amp I was meant to have - The grass just looked greener on the DB-4? You never know until you try it. There are too many Z amps that I love to go with a Vox.....I'll end up with a Stangray or Maz Jr (both of which I hold in high regards)..I'll happily play one of those until I can get another Z-Wreck. There is a slight chance that the guy I sold my Z-Wreck to may let me buy it back when I sell the DB-4. He'll know Saturday.

My V1 Mazerati is a jangly beast. It can get thick too. It hits all the right spots to my ear. Look for a V1...B) Bummer the DB4 isn't working out for you. Give a bit more time. Let your ears adjust to the newbie. Maybe she'll grow on you.

All amps can't be all things to all people - that's why Doc has so many flavors!

For what it's worth, I have a few 60's Vox AC30's, but still play through the Wreck 98% of the time when I want that jangly thang, which is most all of the time. The Wreck is so freaking versatile and smooth and can dependably get what I'm looking for so quickly that it's my go-to amp! Those tone knobs have a ton of range of tones in them, and I twiddle them for different tunes. And clean to as nazzy as you want! If I could only have one amp, the Wreck would be the one. With a Z Brake, of course.

that, of course, is not to say I don't need a DB4. i'm purty sure I do.
