How well do new production 6V6s, other than JJ's, work with the Z-Lux? From what I've gleaned from reading up on this amp, the Doc specifically used JJs in it's design.
I'm giving serious thought on pulling the trigger, but I'm hesitant of being locked into only one brand of power tubes that work well. What if JJ discontinued that model, or went out of business?

Similar question came up recently on the Remedy section (they both have the same power amp), and Dr. Z stated that you can sub in 5881's in place of the JJ's. I'm betting the JJ's sounded the way Dr. Z wanted the amp to sound. Still, it's nice knowing you aren't locked in to one specific brand and model of tube.
I have both amps, so I've always planned to lay in a supply of a few tube changes here...

I'm pretty sure Doc said that the JJ's are the only tubes that can handle the high plate voltage.

Cool! Thanks for that info. If the JJs were the only option, I'd pass on the Z-Lux. Now I just have to choose a color! Decisions, decisions...

I'm pretty sure Doc said that the JJ's are the only tubes that can handle the high plate voltage. Actually the JJs are the only 6V6's that can handle the high plate voltage. 5881's are rated for quite a lot higher than 6V6s, so the knowledge that they will work is valuable for those who don't want to feel cornered into one specific tube. I'll probably always have the JJs in my amps, but if JJ suddenly went out of business, there is still a backup plan.

There will always be a backup plan. You probably won't have any luck with any 6V6 types other than JJ's. But you can always go to a 6L6 type and have the cathode bias resistor changed to accommodate that if needed. I think the best option is to just stock up on JJ 6V6's. I have two matched octets in my tube stash. That will probably last me the rest of my playing life.
